HP announced a new line of micro servers, these are Intel box's, with iLo for an additional cost of course. Any of you guys thinking of moving from the hp media server to one of these? And do you think WHS2011 would be fine on it?

PS It supports hardware RAID (0 and 1)

Those new generation boxes look nice. Lots of people have used the previous generation of N40L microserver using AMD chips, they support hardware RAID 0/1 as well. I've got a couple of them, WHS 2011 runs fine.

I dig the new look. If I hadn't just gotten my quad core EX495 I might think about this a little

Q9550s chip upgrade. Picked it up pretty cheap.

Appears to be a nice unit. I briefly took some time to look at the Users Guide for it. Appears to have different options which could make it on the expensive side. Can't wait till someone unboxes one and breaks it down and starts a new round of modding.

yeah that is going to be very interesting. I want to know what kind of CPU upgrades it will accept.

If I were to dream a bit I would like to see the same unit with a Quad Core Option of course I would also like to see more drive bays but then again I have to keep in mind who the market target for this unit if for and I am not part of it but damn it I do envy those who can live within a 4 drive system. It does get expensive when you outgrow a small server system and end up going with a larger system.

Thank God they are coming out with larger and larger drive sizes which makes the need for larger drive systems less necessary.

It does have a PCIe slot which would allow your to install the p222 controller http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/arraycontrollers/smartarrayp222/ that would them allow you to connect a external sata or sas storage box, and there is are these and they are not CHEAP

4 bay sata (12 tb) http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/file-object-storage/product-detail.html?oid=5335884
Image

25 bay sas sff
(http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/file-object-storage/product-detail.html?oid=5335908
Image

a 12 bay sas lff (42TB Raw)http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/file-object-storage/product-detail.html?oid=5335911

If you need even more storage this holds 70 hard drives, but it requires a different controller than the p222

This is awesome to see, at least the oems are still thinking Home/SBS.
I am hoping they pop out with something down the road that will replace all the micro server stuff.
My wish list:
Tower
Redundant module Power supplies
Intel quad 3. something / 16 gig min. memory
Blu-ray/dvd burner
2 bays for raid1 OS.
2 bays for backups only, OS and client backups
6 bays for 2-6 tb sata drives. Storage pool.
Filtered big cooling.
VGA/Mouse/keyboard
Dual nics
A matching tower via usb3/esata that would hold 8 more sata bays to set right next to it.
Redundant module Power supplies.
Filtered big cooling.
Drive lights that worked! And all built with Mil spec stuff.

I would pay 3-5 thousand easily for a setup like that.
P.S. God forbid it would have spare parts for like 5-10 years to keep it going.
Come on OEM's Take my money!!! I dare ya

They have stuff like that you just have to stop looking at the SFF models and move on to the big boy toys that HP, Dell and others have to sell its just they do not look as cool as the SFF units that HP has put out in the past.

As for what skeeter has posted there are a lot of the older versions of those on eBay as we speak but the ones I was looking at were the older SAS/SATA I units but some were without the trays so the initial cost savings is gone when you have to go out and buy the trays.

I just went with older Supermicro storage servers, cheap and robust. Use my mediaservers as backup to Synology servers which are hot backup to the Supermicros. The Synology servers(an DS1811 and a DS1511 with DX510) have had some interesting side benefits. How bout Iphone and Ipad access without bothering with port forwarding. Remember, I have a winter residence in Florida and summer in NY so the double hardware at each residence.

Update, at http://b3n.org/installed-xeon-e3-1230v2-in-gen8-hp-microserver apparently the lower end model that comes with a Intel® Celeron® G1610T (2 core, 2.3 GHz, 2MB, 35W can be upgraded to a Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1230 v2 (8M Cache, 3.30 GHz). You could use the same drives from the ex servers in this ms. There is also a thread on adding a different smart array controller. So all in all this looks like its a viable option.

I'm looking at this, I found a low profile dual raid ssd pcie card that would be perfect for the OS and have the 4 bays for storage.
What I'm waiting for is to see how big WD reds will be this fall, I could see a raid 1 OS pcie and (4) 5tb red drives with W2012E as a long term solution. Put 3 of them in the storage spaces and use the 4th one for backups.

Only down side is the price tag.
$400 for the box plus a second one for parts
$300 for the card
$300 for cpu upgrade
$400 for W2012E
$100 for more ram
??? God knows what these new reds will go for. We would have to get at least 10 years out of it with that price.
I keep trying to talk myself out of it, but it's getting harder. ](*,)
Really, what else am I going to spend 2-3 grand on? :-#
If HP was really cool they would build a matching 4 bay USB 3 Enclosure that would stack. \:D/

Gardian,

I keep telling you to build a server to suit your needs and you can still have a small form factor, something that does not rely on passive cooling. Just look at the extra cost of the added components and then you want to get a spare to support the one unit as you and I have done with the MSS.

Add all the hardware up your listing and you can build a much better system that can rock and roll then what your looking at and would be able to pickup replacement parts off the shelf from your favorite supplier. Plus when you look at the component warranties you get a much longer warranties on the components as many have 1 or more years. Top that with the ability to purchase much higher quality components.

Think about it and compare the pro's and con's not to mention the overall cost of ownership.
