Hello folks, and thanks again for your support..
This will probably be an easy question for the gurus here..but I have left the guru clan a long time ago. ( I used to be a data tech for AT&T in the 80's..but that's ancient history..)
Instead of a walk down memory lane, let me get right to the point..

I am currently looking for an upgraded processor for my HP xw4600 workstation, It currently has a Intel Pentium E2180..conroe,(if that means something)..following or in next post will be the CPU_Z report..

I have already ordered faster RAM but now looking for bigger better processor..yeah I know its an older PC but..I am older too. can appreciate any guidance and help with this folks..

the following will be the edited version of the CPU-Z info..If you need more info just tell me what and I will send it..

Please point me in the right direction folks...it is quite appreciated and thank you in advance

Although this is not a mediasmart question (unless it has WHS on it) I think i can help ya with your question anyway. That CPU is in the same group as the servers so (depending on bios) you should be able to go up to the E8600 maybe.
I upgraded my Dell 755 workstation at work to the E6800, had to update the bios to do it but it's working just fine. It also is hotter then it was before, but staying in limits to not fry.

My 2 510 servers have the E5800 in them and they do great

Do a search for Socket 775 LGA cpu and you will fine all of the possibilities.
Here is one: http://www.cpu-world.com/info/Intel/processor-number.html

These are at the upper end of that series: You can pick them up on ebay for 50-60 bucks.
The E5800 3.20 GHz Dualcore with 2 meg L2 cache.
The E6800 3.33 GHz Dualcore with 2 meg L2 cache.
The E8600 3.33 GHz Dualcore with 6 meg L2 cache.
Your machine will go up to Core 2 Extreme Quad Core QX9650 3.0GHz and if ya get lucky you could even find a Q9550S Core 2 Quad Core 2.83ghz (S) being the low wattage version so lower heat. But it will set ya back a couple hundred if your lucky.
