Hi everyone, I'm new here, been creeping the forums and recently got an EX485 from having experience with an EX490 and 495 for a year.

I'm switching over my internet from Bell Canada to Acanac, similar to Teksavvy. The 'recommended' modem, a Motorola SB5101N only has 10/100 port. Does having a gigabit port on a modem matter? Am I making any sense.. Sort of new to IT as well

Also a question.. what is DOCSIS 2.0?

Thanks,

J

DOCSIS 2.0 is used for high speed modems. My modem is a DOCSIS 3.0 and is backward compatable. I needed this to break the 30Mbps barrier to hit 60Mbps and now 100Mbps but I believe DOCSIS 2 is good upto 30Mbps.

Now Google is your friend so you could also Google DOCSIS and get a wealth of info but the Wikipedias can explain it far better than I so check it out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS

A 10/100 port will suport upto 100Mbps. So if your ISP is under that then your ok and your gigabit devices on your intranet should all be connected to gigabit devices for highspeed internal connections. I use a Gigaite Router, Switches and use CAT6 cables between those devices and for all other devices not gigabyte I use CAT5.

This is what I got...

Product Features
Designed to provide a cost effective, next generation technology to offer a high speed residential or commercial service tier
User-friendly online diagnostics and bonded channel status page
Features a 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Port for incredible wired network speeds
Capable of downloading up to 2000 times faster than 56k analog phone modems; up to 4 times faster than DOCSIS 2.0 broadband
Intuitive, easy to read front panel operational status LEDs
Technical Details
Brand Name: Motorola

to me I think its more preception of fast. I dont want to think that I could have a bottle neck on my side and the modem was cheap.

Techsavvy is awesome they are simply reselling Telus DSL, don't port block, and have all of the possible speeds Telus does. If you have Shaw in your area, you can get 10, 20, 50, 100 or 250 Mbps packages. $115/month for Shaw Broadband 250. Insanity, if only the wife was open to some insanity...

That right there answers your question - 100 is more than adequate - no need for gigabit.
