Hey Cavediver. Question for ya. Would you consider selling the custom power cables used in your Norco build ? It would be a great upgrade just like your fan boards for us Norco owners. Give it some thought and let me know. |

I have looked in to having a batch made to sell and have sourced a couple of local companies that will make batches of cables to spec, but haven't gotten a quote yet. They would just be a generic cable for the 4220 with 5 EZ crimp connectors for the backplane with a 4-pin male molex connector at the bottom and a 4-pin female molex at the top and probably no sheathing and heatshrink as that adds a lot of time and cost to making the cable. |

That sounds great though. It would be a bigger gauge of wire as well correct ? I know there has been talks about the current running through the stock wires and it could be a fire waiting to happen. If i read correct i believe that was part of the reason for you to make your wire upgrade or it could have been Chasrobin. Would you make it use both connectors for the backplane ? This would be a great item for sure Cavediver. I would see no reason why they would not fly off your shelf like the Fan Boards you offer. Please keep the forum posted on updates if you will offer and sell the wire setup. Any new additions to Andromeda ? |

Actually, I think Cavediver did his in 18awg wire first. The wire's that come from most power supplies to a molex is 24awg a much thinner wire. Usually it's fairly safe to hang four devices off this arrangment. But in the Norco you have 20 drives pulling power all at once on startup. Now going from 24awg, 20awg, to 18awg is not linear in the amount of current the wire can handle. it ramps up considerably, also we must keep in mind drives have become much more efficient in the past few years. So having access to Drive arrays at work I looked at the guage of wire they use in those systems. And turned out 18awg was very common, and as I had never heard of a fire in the wire of a data center array felt very safe going that route. Of course in my Harness I doubled up so I used 18awg but then used a secondary run back to the power supply. As I use a single rail power supply this effectively becomes a 9awg setup to the backplanes, I have also monitored the temp of the wire itself under load with no appeciable temp rise. The worst period would be a cold boot spinup of all 20 drives at once, I doubt even in a failure there would be fire, but it would smell bad as likely the 12V line burned through. I also doubt this would damage any of your hard drives as it would just be like a power failure. But better safe than sorry. |

cavediver- I received my fan board yesterday and am very impressed by the craftsmanship. I looks nice and sturdy! I also ordered the same 1600rpm fans as well. I looked on your Andromeda thread and saw somewhere that you have speedfan setup. How do you have the fans powered? Are you using a splitter of some kind for the MOBO to read the speeds? Could you elaborate? Thanks for this great mod to my Norco! |

Could you elaborate? Thanks for this great mod to my Norco! Andromeda's fan board fans are powered directly off the PSU to the fan board power backplane. I cannot monitor them via Speedfan. The only fan powered off my mobo is the CPU cooler fan. |

You can split off the speed cable to a second 3-pin connector and run that to a motherboard header. Most 3-pin cables are easy to take apart. You would only get the speed of the modified fan, however. Keith |
