I decided to make sure that virtual cable would continue to work with subsequent installs

Apple released iTunes 10.1.1 in the past few days and I upgraded my server to the latest version. The process described in this thread survived the upgrade, although a server restart was required for the new version to recognize Virtual Cable.

Take a look at these two postings for detailed instructions on how to install iTunes on the WHS :

This is the one I followed. It works fine for iTunes 10 -

Alternately try :

Good luck... let me know which approach worked for you.

I followed the steps to remove Itunes and the services running on the WHS and when I rebooted the WHS box it disappeared from my network. I have not found a way to connect to it yet and it is making me very nervous. I have attempted to do a server recovery and the recovery application can not find the server either. I have network connectivity LED lights on the back of the WHS but can not find the box anywhere on my network. any advice? Thank you-

Start a new thread that describes your problem and ask for help. What you describe seems only tangentially relevant to this thread.

Okay, it's been awhile and I was almost true to my word! Thanks for the downloading suggestion and I've got it all working--my AppleTV recognizes iTunes on the server and everything--but I can't get rid of the Audio/Playback error that pops up automatically when the server opens iTunes on start-up and I can't select Direct Sound in QT.

I tried the VNC idea and couldn't make it work--is this the only way?

Any idea how to turn this error message off so I can be free of using my PC as a go-between for iTunes and my WHS?

Thanks again for the posts. ](*,)

I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the iTunes 10 Modded install files they wouldnt mind sharing. I tried to create the install files when it was iTunes 9, never got it to work.

You already asked this question recently, and I answered it here: viewtopic.php?p=77767#p77767

Cliff,

You are right it was super easy with 10.1.1.4! I was about to give up due to error saying it needed win xp or higher and 32bit. Glad I didnt thank goodness. the only other error was the regular audio one. No big deal.

Have you updated to the newest version of iTunes or stopped after 10.1.1 was installed?

I think the current version of iTunes is 10.1.2, which was released in the last few days. I have been working on other things and updating the server instance has not been a priority.

FYI, just installed the latest version of iTunes, 10.2 by using some of the tips in this thread. I did not have any previous version, so nothing to uninstall first, and I did not bother to uninstall bonjour or anything like that as suggested.

I did it from my mac, using remote desktop to the WHS.
    - Made sure I changed the RDC preference to output sound form the windows computer only
    - Installed virtual audio cable
    - rebooted WHS
    - Installed iTunes 10.2.
    - Added the exceptions to DEP and disabled iPod service.
    - Rebooted WHS
    - Started iTunes, no errors.

Need to get it to start iTunes automatically on a reboot, but other than that, procedure worked great.

I can confirm 10.2 does upgrade nicely. I updated my ex475 from 8 to 10.2. I just uninstalled and reinstalled. when I got the error about only running on xp sp2 or higher I clicked the little x instead of ok worked just fine.

I am new to this forum and I want to than you for putting up such detailed instructions or installing iTune in the mediasmart server. But I have a very basic question: first, I have not been able to download the itune installer directly to the WHS with RDC;

secondly; after I copy and paste from the remote PC, when I tried to run the itune setup.exe, the WHS reports that I have no permission to the file and it just would not execute. Please help. Thanks
