I had two failing Seagate hard drives. The first drive was a 1.5TB storage drive that I have sent back to Seagate and got a refurb as a return. It shows in the "Server Storage" list as healthy with a green light ... but I think that's worth absolutely zero because so does my 1.5TB System drive. Anyway. The drive that Seagate sent me as a refurb shows a few yellow "Warning Triangles" in Home Sever SMART add-in.

So... my question is... Do all drives have a few triangles? How big of a deal is this? Should I feel confident in using this Refurb drive as a storage drive in the server? Should I contact Seagate for a replacement for their replacement?

I have called HP for a Restore disk. When that shows up, I plan to use a 1TB Western Digital drive (currently in the EX495 as a Storage drive) as the system drive, and send the current system drive back to Seagate for another replacement.

I feel like I'm doing the "Hard Drive Polka." :chicken:

I have done a lot of refurbs and never saw a warning with any of them. The manufacturer clears the smart data during the refurb process. Did you reset the drive data in the Smart addin. It may be showing the data from the previous drive.

I did not reset it. After doing so, the triangles went away, but there are a few things that say "Pre-fail" on them.

I'd take a screen shot of the screen and email it to Seagate support with a request to open a ticket on it - and then ask for a clean drive :p

I don't think there is anything wrong with your drives. The pre-fail you see, I believe, is the type of Smart data it is and has nothing to do with errors. If there are no warnings, don't go looking for problems. They will show up soon enough. Whenever you change drives with warnings you must reset the data and I believe you did that.

EricE - if I find that the refurb really does have issues, that is what I will do. :D

erail - thanks for the info. The disks showed up yesterday (<24 hours later - impressive!) so hopefully i'll be able to determine 100% what's going on later today.
