Post subject:  Backup Service is not running

My EX470 is a very old one, probably pre-release sent to our company for compatibility testing. It has since found its way to my basement. I don't think backup services has worked since I got it. The red light has always been on.

It has been restarted many times and the red light is always lit, so restarting the server does not fix the problem.

Today I logged in using Remote Desktop, accessed the Windows Home Server Console. I updated to the latest WHS (PP2) and HP MSS (1.3.8.25155) and that did not fix it.

  • Server Storage says my drive said healthy.
  • Home Network Health says Backup Service is not running.
  • I tried to perform Method 5 of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339 "Backup Database Repair" but the application closes after only a few seconds and takes the Windows Home Server console with it.

Computers & Backup tab of WHS console has several computers listed that do not exist. But because the service is not running I cannot delete them.

If use the Event Viewer tool, under HomeServer it has the same 3 errors repeated over and over :

  • "Client Backup server failed at d:/wssg_src/whs_pp2/qhs/src/backup/util/diskfile.cpp(145)"
  • "Unexpected error 0x48f from CreateFile on D:/folders/{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}/Commit.dat: The device is not connected."
  • "Persistent Drive Letter Service failed: Starting service: No attempts to start the Service have been made since the last boot."

I installed the latest version of WHSBDBB which said "no backups found". I pressed the backup button and then create and it pops up with a dialog saying "Error backup up files. Canceling backup". If you look at the application event log then it says:

"System.IO.IOException The device is not connected"

Anyone got any ideas?

I hate when this happens. :x I've been hacking my EX470 ever since it was first released and have been through a lot with it. However because of the hacking, I come accross the Backup Service not running. I have tried all I've learned to fix it, but in the end I always have to do a clean install. Trying to uninstall PP's or updates or restarting services or anything else doesn't work for me. Save yourself a headache and do a clean install, not a full server recovery.

:sanjuan:

PS, if some does figure out how to resolve this, you are king.

I've fixed it.

I had already followed the error log paper trail using the Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer tool which showed problems with a file on D:

Turns out that all the files in the folder : D:/folders/{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} had been corrupted. The error "Device not connected" is a crap error message which actually means "invalid file handle error" caused by corrupted files / filesystem.

I removed the files in this folder then followed Method 5 of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339 "Backup Database Repair" and it replaced D:/folders/{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}/Commit.dat and everything came back to life.

I have having the very same problem. I tried to delete the files in the suggested D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} but I get The file can not be accessed by the system. Any ideas why this would be happening? Thanks

Just a little ....../Commit.dat.bak then a reboot and the back up service came right back up and running. TY

Thank you OP. Very helpful information.

If you get a message Backup Service Not Running and that you need to repair the database, but the database repair does not resolve the issue after multiple tries, then this could be your ticket.

This resolved the issue for me. The file "Commit.dat" was the culprit.

How do I see to the D:/folders/... so that I can delete any corrupt files? Any attempts to log in only gives me access to the shared files.

You need to use remote desktop connection.
Not the whs console.
It is in the accessories section of a windows desktop.
Then you can access everything.

After all these years, this helped me tremendously!

I just re-named commit.dat to commit.dat.bak as you said. I didn't delete the rest of the files in that directory. So far so good!
