My home power went out this weekend and after the power was up again all my home computers automatically re-started but the server. Is there a way to have th server auto re-start on its own after a power outage?

Auto-restart after power loss is usually a bios feature. Depending on the motherboard, WHS could use ACPI to set it.... You should poke around in there (control panel/power) and see if you can find anything.

This server sits in a property that I only occationally visit, say once every 4 to 5 months. If the server cycles off after a power outage it would take a trip on a plane from M.N. to S.C. to restart it. I am using this as my office off site storage so I need to access it frequently for back ups.

I think this may not be the right product for that use model, unfortunately. :(

I know with my 2000 server it starts after a power outage so I assume the comment about the bios is the way to go. But how does one get into the bios for changes when going in remote?

You could always try a really big UPS. 1500 or so should last until the power comes back on.

You need a direct console connection to get the needed keyboard and VGA inputs/outputs, and this functionality is not provided on the system. In short, there is no known way to modify BIOS settings on the MSS at this time...

I would also suggest you get a power back up. I had a power failure while the server was doing some balancing and it caused a data consistency issue. In other words my back ups got corrupted! You may have better luck than I do when it comes to corruption issues but I found that a UPS is something everyone should have. However, I'm not sure if it is your cure. It would depend on how long the power goes go when it you loose it. Around here the power goes out whenever a canary farts but it is usually only out for a short time so my UPS can usually cover it. Other than that I might suggest getting a neighbor (one that is trustworthy and has enough smarts to turn the server back on!) to restart the server when you are unable to do it yourself. We have remote shutdown and startup hardware where I work but it is too expensive for normal home use.

I moved my MSS to an APC 1500 last evening -- and the power was off for 20 minutes in the middle of my backups last evening. The laptop worked off the battery and the desktop -- on another APC 1500 -- kept right on chugging along. Only indication of a problem was all the clocks (stiove, microwave, etc.) to reset!

These should definitely be on a backup power source!
