Post subject:  WHS Connector install fails on 2 of 3 Windows 10 PCs

I posted this a few days ago but it was under an old thread and I have some more information now.

My old WHS became unstable so I installed it on a Dell Optiplex 9020. I ran the WHS connector on laptop A (a Windows 10 PC Version 21H2 Build 19044.2006) and everything went fine. I than ran the connector software on laptop B (Windows 10 Build Version 22H2 Build 19045.2486) and although it found the WHS server, after entering the password I got a message saying "The operation cannot be completed at this time". The same thing happened on laptop C (Windows 10 Version 21H2 Build 19044.2486).

I see nothing in the WHS event viewer but in the laptop B event viewer I see a warning for HomeServer that says "Server ID is not set yet. On the client it means that the server discovery (discovery.exe) was not run or was not run successfully". On laptop C there's a warning that says only "The description for Event ID 1794 from source HomeServer cannot be found". There's a similar for the info message for event 1817.

On laptop B, at the time of the error, the Windows Home Server program folder has been created but the registry in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Transport\Server lacks the GUID (it's zeros) and for Name it has only "SERVER".

This is my 4th install of WHS server but I've never seen this happen before and it's quite frustrating. I've used the same WHSConnector.exe that I used on laptop A. Although I found the toolkit thanks to a contributor here, I can't use it because it's Win32.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

@samsquared.

Questions!

What version of the software install disk are you using to install the OS on the Dell and the prior installs?
What hardware were your prior WHS installs on?
If you are trying to install WHS v1, do you have the earlier versions of .NET Framework & SMB1 enabled on the client?
Are you able to RDP into the server using the client that won't install the connector?

Let me know.

lioninstreet, thanks for your reply. In the time since I posted, I have been able to get laptop B connected successfully, although I really didn't "solve" the problem of why I got the error in the first place. As a poster mentioned in another thread, at the point the "Operation cannot be completed" message appears, almost everything is in place for a successful connection and if you kill the running task, all will be left instead of being cleaned up.

I am now trying the process on laptop C and will make notes as I go. I was fortunate in that laptop A didn't experience this issue and finished the connector install successfully so I could look at registry entries. These are the general steps:

    1. Use task manager or taskkill to kill the WHSConnector and WHSConnectorinstall processes. As I recall, even after getting rid of the two tasks, the window was still present, so I rebooted.
    2. After reboot, the WHS icon was in the tray but with some options being unavailable (like backup now). A key and its values under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Transport\Clients was missing. Using the working laptop as a template, I made a .reg file with the missing items, customized for the machine being set up.
    3. I merged the .reg into the registry and the connector worked correctly (can't remember if a reboot was needed).

I can provide more detail if anyone is interested. As a precaution I would suggest exporting registry key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server to a text file to use in the future in case the connector software needs to be reinstalled and there's a problem.

Well, the installation of the connector on laptop C is vexing me. I applied the same basic steps, but in the event viewer I see this error:

Please, run Discovery.exe again. This machine certificate CD7635257C9BA41BBAA866AF6B48B0432 is missing. It normally means that the server discovery (discovery.exe) was not run or was not run successfully.

The certificate value listed is the letter "C" plus the GUID (minus the dashes) from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Transport in the registry for the laptop.

I've followed steps here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/networking/cannot-turn-on-network-discovery. I tried turning SMB1 on (although neither of the other two laptops are that way) but it didn't work so I turned it off again. I disabled the Norton firewall to no avail. I can RDP to the WHS Server from the problem laptop. Compared to the other two machines, the registry entries look OK.

Any ideas? How do I "run Discovery again"?

Still trying to figure out:

What version of the software install disk are you using to install the OS on the Dell and the prior installs?
Are you able to RDP into the server using the client that won't install the connector?

Sorry I didn't answer those questions before but I just didn't expect this issue. Yes, I can RDP from laptop C to the WHS server. The connector installer version I'm using is 6.0.1800.0 (same as downloaded from http://<WHSServer>:5500).

I do see a 6.0.2423.0 version but I have no idea where I got that. The 1800 version is what I used on the other installs. I've made so many manual changes to the WHS registry on that PC that I may just remove everything and start over. Frustration level is high right now.

Thanks for your reply!

Sounds like exactly what I would do.

I've finally thrown in the towel and am abandoning WHS. I never got the problem laptop to work and when I went in to take one lost backup of my laptop, I wasn't able to because I'm not able to register my license key.

I'm now setting up Windows Server Essentials 2016. Thank you for trying to assist in getting the WHS working again.
