Hi everyone, quick question if I may.

Back in February I purchased a replacement PSU from KDM for my EX490 as after over ten years of faithful service I thought it prudent to start maintaining a stock of spare parts. Well, a few days ago the original PSU finally gave up the ghost so I got the KDM unit out the drawer and swapped it in.

Everything appears to be fine apart from one thing, the fan noise! After just a few minutes of operation, the fan in the PSU starts to ramp up, after a couple more minutes it's at full speed and stays there, my previously relatively quiet little Media Server now sounds more like one of it's big blade cousins!

I messaged KDM about it and they have responded saying that the noise is typical for a slimline PSU such as this one, but I've read countless posts on this forum about replacing the PSU and I can't remember seeing anyone commenting that the KDM has a loud fan. I think I've got a faulty unit so I'm keeping my EX490 powered down for now in case it's causing damage, can anyone with a KDM PSU comment about the fan noise?

Thanks.

Thanks for the confirmation, I thought something wasn't right. I've got another PSU on the way from Overtek but I'll get back in touch with KDM about getting this one replaced.

Thanks again.

Same here my KDM was flawlees .
Replaced 1.5 years ago.
Maybe if it is in fact the psu fan .
Some packing material got lodged in the fan blade?

Or you have another fan that is making noise now.
My understanding is the psu fan runs at a constant speed?

The bios only controls the two larger fans on the back of the unit.

You did need to remove the backplane to replace the psu.
At that time did you inspect the two back fans and clean them.

Thanks Ruben.

Yes, I took both the case fans out and gave them a clean while I had the opportunity. Fan speeds as reported in the console seem as normal and so does the CPU and HDD's temps. I also removed all the hard drives and booted from an UNRAID usb stick which places a lot less load on the CPU than WHS and the exact same thing happens.

The one I ordered from Overtek here in the UK is due to arrive in the next day or two so that may prove it definitively.

Just to update, I've replaced the KDM PSU with one from Overtek and relative quiet has returned to my EX490!

Now to try and get KDM to reply to my messages about a replacement/refund!

All I can say is kdm used to have good customer service for us.
Hopefully you can convince them that the fan was defective.
