For those of you that had trouble with the MS Router tool and had to resort to manual port forwarding, we have a new tutorial for you! Head on over to http://www.MyHomeServer.com for the tutorial

We designed this how-to for the folks who have to manually forward ports in their router to run the HP MediaSmart. If the MS router tool didn’t work with your router, manual port forwarding is the only way to get to your server remotely.

Why is setting a Static IP on your HP MediaSmart server so important?
If you used manual port forwarding and you leave the server on DHCP, you are asking for trouble down the road. Eventually your MediaSmart server LAN IP address (the internal IP) will change due to a power outage or server reboot, etc. This means your server could get a new LAN IP when you restart it….and then your manual port forwarding for remote access would be broken. This means no remote access or web/photo sharing for anyone until you fix it!

I'd like to plan on doing a tutorial on wordpress and mysql using a MediaSmart but it could be a while. My next tutorial is going to take some time, but thanks for the suggestions!

FYI, we added yet another new tutorial, elaborating on the troubleshooting for remote access. Head on over to http://www.MyHomeServer.com for the details

Umm...wouldn't the limit of 10 simultaneous connections kinda limit running a blog to which you may be server more then 10 simultaneous connections?

Not trying to burst anyone's bubble. I mean, I love the idea. I was thinking of running a game server on mine, but the fact that its limited to 10 kinda ruins things.

I don't believe there is a limit on the web server since it's based off of SBS 2003. But, I could be wrong, can you plop in a URL that shows this?

I do know that it has a 10 PC limit for backups, etc....

 hehe my bad, got them mixed up. Sorry about that.

Its 10 user limit, and not 10 simultaneous connections.

So you could host an actual web server..... or a game server 8)

Hmm...cant seem to find any HP document stating the 10 user limit... But i just tested it, made 10 users, then tried to make another one and it gave an error message.

That's a WHS limitation, it should be covered in the WHS online help.
