Post subject:  EX490 PSU through 24 to 20 pin adapter?

Hi,
after years of service, my PSU died. I bought a replacement from ebay but it runs very loud (little fan goes 100% all the time). I have been thinking of running an external quiet PSU and connect it through an adapter from 24 pins to 20 (or get a PSU that has the connector that can be split into 20 + 4). Will it work? is the wiring standard?

can I get any standard PSU for a PC and connect through something like that?

cheers :-) :encore:

If you purchased a proper psu for the mediasmart server like from KDM which does not need a patch cord to connect to the MB.
Then I suggest you environment is causing the fan to run at %100.
Could be the ambient temp is to high.
Could be you have not applied thermal paste to the cpu properly if the heat sink was removed for any reason.
Could be you are using non approved drives running to hot. A wd black will do it.
Could be you changed the cpu from stock. Using a higher wattage than stock.
Could be one or both of the other fans have failed.

I replaced my psu with a kdm psu last year and I have 0 issues.

I did replace with KDM. it is an early spring here and the temperature indoors is max 19 degrees (celsius). in summer it will go up to 40. The stock PSU was quiet. I replaced KDM's fan with the one from the old PSU and it is quieter but still runs way too fast. I have the PSU outside the case now so it is separated from the drives etc. I have never touched heat sink on the cpu. Both fans in the case are ok.
I tired to run the PSU external with the fan disconnected but it got extremely hot quite quickly. Way too hot to touch. I don't think it should be that hot without the fan in the ambient temperature below 19 degrees celsius. Maybe I just got a bad one.

thank you yakuza for the wiring diagram!
