I'm about to acquire a new HP ZBOOK laptop that is running WIN-10 PRO.

Up till now I've been backing up XP, VISTA and WIN-7 PRO without issues. I do have a legal WHS2011 package so maybe it would be better to upgrade to it but for the moment I'd like to not have to go through the pain of learning a new server.

It will backup.
When you install the connector it will install a hp x64 bit app.

Now restore from the original cd can be tricky because of the extra hidden partitions.
You have to use the advanced option.
But you can still view the backups and copy them over to the client.

I have three win 10 clients on a ex490 with whs1.
One is pro and the other two are home versions.

Since this is a new pc.
You need to make sure that smb1 is installed.
By going to turn on windows features
It can run side by side with smb2
Just do not enable the automatic removal or it will self delete at a later time.

I take it you mean this
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-acce ... windows-10

Which I'll probably need to access Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone Black controllers. Possibly even LinuxCNC.

Thank you
John

Well the new 1TB drive was just delivered by Amazon. I'm doing a server restore onto the the system 1TB drive from circa 2011 that was used as a WIN-7 drive for 5 years and then replaced.

Just testing the reconstruction of the WHS-2003 Server after the original 500GB system drive started failing.

Undecided whether to just put WHS2011 onto that new drive and then take the 4TB drive that WHS2011 turned into a 2TB.
The other 2TB not available due to MBR rather than UEFI. I think that's due to the PC BIOS not handling it right.

Not even sure I can ever get a 4TB drive working on either WHS2003 or WHS2011 with this PC.

Are we talking apples and oranges?
This topic started with a new pc with win10 if compatible with whs1.

Quick followup to this. WHS 2003 (AKA WHS-1) has no trouble backing up WIN-10. In fact WIN-10 didn't even need anything change for network access. I went to the \\SERVER\Software\Home Server Connector Software folder and ran setup.exe.

Not only found but correctly identified as WIN-10 Pro. Backups appear to be working.

FYI,
As I said before whs1 will backup win 10 also.
I have three clients that are win10
The trick is the restore.

well on whsv1.
when you do a pc restore.
Win 10 has a few hidden drive partitions. Like boot for example.
Whs1 sees them as different drives.
so if you use the normal restore method.
it does not create hidden partitions.
It makes them all logical drives.
So your os drive ends up as C; , D:, E: , F: it all depends on if you upgraded to win10 or have a net new pc with win10 to how many logical drives you end up with.

So you select the advanced option during restore.
And force them to be on the os drive as hidden.
Then you end up with the normal c: d: logical drives and the rest are hidden.

I know nothing of WHS 2003 maybe it will work fine with no intervention.
But I doubt it because win10 was released after WHS 2003

Thanks. I'll print this out and put it with the Microsoft Distribution CDROM. I was also able to successfully register the WHS-2003 (WHS-1) by telephone. Even though it was able to go online and update explorer to Rev 8 along with a significant number of KBxxxxxx items the microsoft web site doesn't allow access with ie8. Another one of the ways they've broken perfectly working software in order to sell new products.

Thanks again for your help.

I have found that several updates are still there at microsoft.
The problem is they do not update by themselves.
You need to know which ones they are and manually download them yourself.

Don't ask me which ones they are , I never kept track of them

It did automatically update a fair amount and has been reliably backing up 4 PCs. And the WIN-10 HP ZBook event pops out from the RHS of the screen that a backup is starting, successful or that a backup failed.

It's a pity that Microsoft is so hung up cloud storage. WHS-1 is still much nicer and easier to use than WHS-2011.
