I found this server last week in the trash and decided to give it a second life. I built an adaptor for VGA and managed to install debian on it just fine, I was able to access the BIOS and everything like a normal computer.

Yesterday it booted for the last time. I was trying to find out why one of my drives wasn't being recognized and between reboots it decided that would be the last time, now when I start it it boots to this and hangs forever: https://i.imgur.com/rzgxvWL.jpg. Keyboard is plugged in through USB but does nothing.

What I've tried:
- Disconnect everything except for VGA
- BIOS recovery following this: https://www.bios-mods.com/reviews/mothe ... recovered/. I managed to boot to this: https://i.imgur.com/YkhkSiR.jpg but hangs there forever.
- I tried this approach by connecting a HP KU-0316 USB keyboard that is compatible with PS/2 to the PS/2 pins on the CN2 header (same as VGA). Still unresponsive and not recognized.

Any more ideas? I don't understand why it's not getting past the BIOS, when it was working just fine all along.

Looks to me like it's hanging due to a hardware issue. I wouldn't run it on the bench like that for any period of time without a fan flowing on it since it's passively cooled. If it still locks up like that while being cooled you can try reseating RAM, applying new thermal paste, running without the backplane, basically try to isolate hardware components to find the failure point, but my guess is it was in the trash for a reason.

I agree it was in the trash for a reason.
But note the date on your screen print.
The last couple of years a lot of people have had a lot of strange errors.

All caused by a bad date which is caused by a dead battery.

So since you spent some time on the machine.
I would replace the coin battery on the motherboard.

It is something like a cr2032
You may need to go over bios again.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't give much thought about ventilation since CPU is passively cooled, but this started happening while the board was inside the case.

It did come from the trash but I was able to boot it multiple times and even install debian before it started giving me this issue.

Unfortunately changing the battery is one of the first things I tried, and didn't do much. I also removed the battery for a few minutes to clear CMOS, no avail.

I'm currently considering trying to upgrade the CPU to an E5200 but I fear it might be for nothing.

I'm open to any suggestions!

Well there is a small fan in the psu assembly as well as the two large fans on the rear of the case .
Do all three run?

Also do you know what the cpu is now that is installed?
Maybe somebody tried a cpu that is 90watts.

All three fans run fine, and the CPU is the stock AMD Sempron 3400+: https://imgur.com/rzgxvWL.

I am a bit concerned about that " ,1T" at the end of the CPU0 memory information line, it doesn't look right and I'm not sure if it means anything or if it's just that it froze printing something else.

I think that's just a frozen truncation of more text.

You can try cleaning and applying new thermal paste to the CPU but I'd guess it's just a bad unit, and given it's so old I'd probably not put much effort into it.

Too bad that it sounds like your planned resurrection isn't working out. Maybe grab another 470 off of ebay, slide your drives in, and pickup where you left off?

I've seen 'em as low as $50 - $60 delivered. I have a few of the 490's just to make sure if ultimately something croaks, I can easily plug and play. These little servers are great! Nothing else like them, even 10 years later...
