If doing a restore and it failed probably the os never got reinstalled.

No it never makes it to recovery, it does flash blue then violet for awhile and then it goes to solid red, then press the reset button to get the code and the code is 1 blur 5 red and the screen show the picture.

Is it possible your dealing with a corrupted BIOS?

Try pulling the battery out of the mobo to reset it and see if that helps. Also, check the battery's voltage while you have it out. I've seen weird behavior due to weak BIOS batteries.

Hope that helps get you up and running again.

Ok after some more testing i found that my Recovery USB has failed and can no longer boot to it.. I can boot to other device now but I still need to restore WHS because there is no OS anymore on the HD.

Does someone have instructions on building a new USB recovery disk?

Just to clarify you are not able to get the server into recovery mode using the paperclip?

Have you tried to boot with the bottom drive pulled out an inch or so, boot the server and count off five seconds to let the server boot into bios, then slide a drive in. This is an alternate method to get the server into recovery mode.

Also, I'm a bit confused when you mentioned a recovery usb. What you mean is you have copied the recovery DVD onto a USB and you are trying to boot the server by plugging that into the server or a terminal?

What's confusing me is the reference to using a USB to recover from. When I had a 470 I would always load on the OS using a terminal with a DVD player. On my 490 I have a USB to boot from but that's only to bypass the PXIE. A 470 doesn't have that. Do you have a 470 recovery disk?

Unless there is some kind of hardware issue there's a pretty good chance we can help you get the OS loaded back on.

1. With Video, mouse and Key board attached I first booted into recovery mode and watched the screen when it was in WinPE waiting for a response i started the process for the client system.
2. The initial re-image started then about 10 minutes into the recovery the client said there was an error and to retry
3. So restarted the client side recovery but not the system because it still look like it was still listening. The client could not connect.
4. Restated the EX475 and pressed the recovery button, but it would not boot into the recovery this time and anytime since.
5. I suspect that the Recovery USB has been corrupted and no longer works.

The recovery mode uses an on-board USB SIS Flash drive, this drive contains WINPE OS with predefined scripts that when booted will connect to the network and listens for the for the recovery software to establish a connection and do its job to re-image the system. You can see all this while it is booting or while looking through the BIOS as I have the connector board for Video and noticed that when the recovery device is selected for boot is hangs and never boots.

I have already have the needed recovery DVD/CD for EX47x and EX48x because i have 2 of them but they are not boot able, the disk i do not have is the Restore DVD which would be use in this scenario and would boot to.

I am looking for the this recovery image that lives on the system in the USB SIS Flash so i can create a standalone USB or the Restore DVD.

the system can boot form USB.

OK I know what you mean now.

If the reimage is starting it's not necessarily a corrupted SMI.

Whenever I would see my server stuck on listening, I found that to mean either the terminal firewall wasn't fully disabled (there are 3 places it has to be disabled- Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Windows Firewall With Advanced Security\Windows Firewall Properties), an antivirus program is in the way, there is still M$ or HP software on the client that hasn't been shut off, or your not directly connected between the client and server with at least a cat 5e LAN cable and internet disabled.

If memory serves, the 47x was especially quirky sometimes when it came to load the OS in. I sold mine a few years ago but before I did I put a fresh OS on it. I seem to recall needing to have a 32bit OS on the terminal I was using to do the OS install with. Luckily I have an old Dell d630 sitting around with XP on it.

Anyone else running a ex47x able to chime in?

Also, you may have found this already but in case you haven't this post has a bit more detail on SMI:
