My server bit the dust. Won't even power up. I need to get the data off of the drives that were in the unit. I had a full rack of drives, and I need solutions on how to do this. Best option would be to find another HP home server, but I can't spend a lot of cash, just to save those files.

If you have a way to connect the drive to your desktop.
Then pop the drive out of the server.
Then connect it to your desktop and in file explorer just drill down below the root folder.
That is the beauty of whs1 the files are readable unlike a true raid.

I'm sure I had the drives set to raid so the files were spread over the entire array.

What are the specs.
EX???
OS?
There is no such thing as raid in WHS1
Even if you turned on duplication.
You will have the same file on multiple disks though.
But they all are valid.

Now when you connect the drive to the desktop you will need to enable view hidden files and folders.
Forgot to mention that.

Sorry to hear :-(
It most likely is the power supply, most of the time it is. 90%. Was the system clean/cool/ with no power bumps? 10% fried board/ram/cpu.

You can pickup power supplies on ebay (that are re-wired just for the mediasmart servers) as they are "not" wired the same as a normal power supply.
I believe $70-$90 will get you one. Also, sometimes you can find a used "same model" server on ebay for cheap and use for spare parts.

But,
Yes, with WHS V1 stock OS on all media smart and media vault EX-470 to X-510 it's is great to have a 4-5 bay usb external to put the drives in to grab files. I also have a couple of 1 bay docks sata to usb to work on drives so I don't have to open my desktop case.

WHS V1 uses DE which is a Fake/software raid as (Ruben Rocha) said, it's not like a normal raid. You can still get the files, just got to find somewhere to put them.

If you have changed the OS to WHS 2011 or something else then you could have put them in a raid of some kind and then fixing the server would be the way to go, hopefully.

Hope this help, let us know which way you went.... Good Luck.
