Post subject:  Fried LAN Port on EX495 - HELP!!

A lightning strike took out lan ports on all my computers and my EX495. Fixing the computers was easy, just install a NIC card. Fixing my server may be beyond my capabilities. I have read Stephen Bruce's guide on this subject and all the comments that followed. I thought I would give it a try, but the first thing I ran into was the USB-LAN adapter recommended is no longer available. After reading about all the file problems with the Sabrent adapter, I was terrified at the thought of using a alternative brand.

I did a quick forum search to see if there was anything more recent on this subject, but did not find anything. Can anyone help? I do not have access to another server, but I do have a spare WIN 7 computer available. I thought someone had commented they accomplished the fix by installing the server drive in another computer.

Thanks in advance.

I am not going to spend my life looking for a replacement.
But you need a usb lan dongle that is xp compatible
for usb 2.0
This should work with existing drivers
You should give up on a gigabit device.
probably ebay is the best bet.
All other vendors are selling them for up to win 10 which need 64 bit drivers that your server does not support nor do they have a individual driver you need, The have a install file.

Thx, you probably saved me from buying the wrong card. i did find several cards available on eBay, unreconizable names and scarey cheap, but I have nothing to lose. All that I looked at require downloading the drivers. I hope they follow the pattern described in the guide or I'll be lost.

as long as the drivers are individual driver files not exe files and the driver is for say xp or server 2000 that should work.
or the hard way if all you can find is drivers in a exe package, would be if you have a xp pc that works.
Install the usb dongle using theexe file.
Then goto device manager find the drivers used.
Then browse to the folder and copy them.

I found this StarTech adapter on Amazon which might do the trick. It comes with an install disk that contains a file named "setup" so maybe I can just use this adapter and follow the instructions provided in the forum Guide.

Okay this is what I was talking about.
You will need to run setup.exe to get a driver.
Which you can't because you are not connected to the server yet.
so if you attempt to run it on a win7 it will only install the win 7 drivers not all the drivers.

But they do offer the drivers standalone for download.

download the realtec driver zip , extract the zip, then goto the windows xp folder or the 2000 folder.
you can copy them to copy to whatever storage usb flash drive you are using.

Maybe I need to read Stephen Bruce's Guide again, but I thought the steps he described included putting all the files on a USB Flash Drive with the "Setup" file in the root directory. Then he blindly keystokes to the Run command and enters Setup.

What you are describing sounds less complicated, but I'm not sure I totally follow you.

Thx
