Post subject:  Add HDD to pool without using HPMS Console

I am trying to recover from a server failure and am wondering if anyone has explored adding drives to a new server installation without using the HP MediaSmart console and thus, avoid formatting the drives?

I had a server with 3 pool drives that all appear to be healthy with no data corruption.

What I would like to do is be able to reestablish the server without having to add each drive to the pool via the console which formats each drive and wipes off all data. I have backups of everything stored on the pooled drives, but it is going to take a lot of time to restore everything..

So, is it possible to add a drive to WHS without using the console and formatting drives?

Would the following sequence of steps work?

* Install WHS OS on new HDD (would I need to change device ID to be same as failed SYS HDD?)
* Pull all MS and HP updates
* Overwrite via import, WHS registry hive from original server prior to failure
* Install original pool drives in same bays as original server (still have same device IDs)
* Boot server

Would this have, in effect, "restored" the original failed server?

I am guessing the answer is "no", but thought I'd ask because it seems this would be really convenient!

What am I missing?
Cheers

There are posts here about cloning.
But it is a big deal meaning that you need to edit the registry. With a lot of additional steps.

I would never recommend it.
You can do it by installing a new os drive and just running recovery(This will not format all the drives) not reset (This option will reformat all the drives)with the cd that came with the server.
as long as all the other pool drives are good and intact it will rebuild the tombstones.
You will loose client backups and account settings but it is a simple mater of re-installing the connector on each pc and you are done.

Thanks Ruben,

I didn't realize that a recovery could potentially do this.

I might will try that, but I think I did attempt a recovery before but couldn't get one complete.

I also wondered if I could copy the contents of a fresh install SYS partition to the old corrupted SYS partition on the server boot drive. To my knowledge, the drive is healthy, it just suffered from the power losses of a failing power supply.

if you are going to try a recover after a reset it usually will not work unless you ran reset on a different drive than you will use for recover.
But for recover to work your pool drives need to be inserted.
If you use the same drive you used for reset it will loose the tombstones. And show 0 data even though the files are still on the drives.

The pool drives are mounted in the registry with unique id's.
That is why cloning is so difficult.
You have to edit the registry for each drive
