I am trying to recover from a server failure and am wondering if anyone has explored adding drives to a new server installation without using the HP MediaSmart console and thus, avoid formatting the drives?
I had a server with 3 pool drives that all appear to be healthy with no data corruption.
What I would like to do is be able to reestablish the server without having to add each drive to the pool via the console which formats each drive and wipes off all data. I have backups of everything stored on the pooled drives, but it is going to take a lot of time to restore everything..
So, is it possible to add a drive to WHS without using the console and formatting drives?
Would the following sequence of steps work?
* Install WHS OS on new HDD (would I need to change device ID to be same as failed SYS HDD?) * Pull all MS and HP updates * Overwrite via import, WHS registry hive from original server prior to failure * Install original pool drives in same bays as original server (still have same device IDs) * Boot server
Would this have, in effect, "restored" the original failed server?
I am guessing the answer is "no", but thought I'd ask because it seems this would be really convenient!
What am I missing? Cheers
