Been using several different mediasmart servers over the last few years but stumped now. Someone gave me an old Ex470 which I am trying to recover. Is there any type of work around to do a system recovery from a 64bit windows os. Definitely failing trying to recover from windows 10. I no longer have any old systems running 32 bit system. Thanks in advance. Hope someone is still following this old machine.

Hello,
All the mediasmart server's can be recovered with a 32 bit or 64 bit os.
But,
More then likely it is windows 10 that is the problem.

Back in the win7 64 bit days kind of the standard rule of thumb was to bootup in (safe mode with networking), and if your client is a laptop or a desktop with wireless, you would need to disable that wireless nic.

All servers except the 470 you would direct connect with a cat5 cable, the 470 seemed to do ok attached to a switch or router. (As long as the nic is working in the server). If you check your dhcp table in the router after you get the server into recovery mode, you should see something like MInt???? I forget what it exactly says. Then at least you know the server nic is trying to work.

What error are you getting, should be something like (failed at step 1 of 3) or something like that. Knowing that error will help.

Also a couple of other things to think about:
1) the os drive has to be in the bottom bay of the server and I believe it needs to be at least 500gig up to 2tb max.
2) I copy the server recovery disc contents to a desktop folder and run the app from there so it doesn'y have to wait for the cd-rom/dvd-rw sometimes helps.

Let us know how it's failing and some of the win 10 people may have more, I don't use win10 so have not fraught that beast yet. #-o
Good Luck

Yup it fails at step 2. Tried both regular and safe mode. I normally only use safe mode with networking when re-doing my ex490 so that's why I though it might be a problem just with windows 10. I did connect directly to the server from my pc. Always have the os in the bottom tray and in this case it's a 500gb drive so I am stumped. Been working with different ex### servers for years but not a 470 for many. I did find an old motherboard and installed xp on a drive and then the install went perfect but that's an extra pain. Maybe time to put the old ex on eBay. I have several severs including a proliant N40L. I just do this as I am retired and bored and have always like messing with computers. No one needs 4 servers, at least not for home use. :D Thanks for the response. By the way you said you don't use Windows 10. In my opinion it's absolutely the best OS Microsoft has ever put out. Have it on several machines and never had one problem. Just an old mans opinion.

Yep. I figured win 10.
I have read to much about what win 10 sends home to Microsoft, I am not comfortable with it, so passed.
I will run win7 and WHS v1 till they don't work anymore then will look at Chrome books and or Macs. Unless Microsoft starts to play nice (which I doubt).
I have 5 laptops with win7 I have 5 desktops with win7 and 1 desktop with vista.
I tried win 10 on one of my netbooks and did not like it at all.

I do have a win2012E server Basically win8 with the charms, it's not to bad, but I won't use it till I have to and maybe not at all, depending on how the new HP gen 10 ClearOS works.

Enjoy and goodluck....

Actually my favorite server I am running is Openmediavault OS though not as easy as windoze. Lots of fun. I would like to try one of Microsoft's newer server programs but since whs is dead all there other server software is just way too expensive for home use.

Try connecting the server drive to the pc and run diskpart clean all.
It is already in you pc.
Run command.com then type diskpart

Be careful read up on the feature if you have not used it before.
You need to select the correct drive as disk # not like drive x:\:

Clean all will make the drive like it was out of the box.
It will run for a long time but after a few minutes you can exit out.
You will need to initialize the drive with disk manager.
Then place it back in the server and try again.
This works for me with win 10.

Note:
You may need to do this more than once.

I always clean drive with diskpart before a new install. I did not initialize the drive within Windows 10 as it's not necessary when installing on whs 2011 or even whs v1 on my EX490 but maybe on the 470 you need to initialize drive before re-installing it in the server. Next time I do a fresh install on the server will initialize after cleaning and see if that takes care of the problem. For now it's working anyway and didn't need to initialize the drive when I installed the os when using Windows XP machine to re-do the 470 so I don't think that's the problem. Maybe just PFM.

Great you found a xp machine.
I don't have one any more all my desktops/laptops are now win 10.
And that method works for me.
