Most all drives today are rated for 60C operating temperature.
As long as you don't meet or exceed that you are fine.

If you have one of the newer media smarts EX-490 x-510 then yes with a cpu and ram upgrade you could run WHS 2011 (if you can find a copy or even win2012E R2 if you can afford it.
The lights won't work like they did with whs v1 and it will be a lot easier if you had the vga adapter so you can see what your doing.
Some people have even used windows 10 pro and storage spaces to create a home server. Backing up clients is left to acronis or something like that.

When you get to that point, I would look for one of the HP Gen 10 or even one of the Gen 9 because the hardware is newer.
These little servers are running out of road fast.

I have all my clients keep even bit of data on the server so my backups are very small and fast.
And I would not worry about the temps till they hit 50 consistently. But cooler is better.

Sorry didn't really answer any of your questions, but hopefully give you some options to think about.

I have a DIY win2012E I built a couple years back for down the road. But I have installed it on my x-510 and it ran just fine. (same hardware as the ex-490)
