Hey guys, as my EX490 is a bit older now, I've been more concerned with something going wrong and losing my data.

I do realize I can pull the drive(s) and read them on the PC via a HDD dock but I was wondering if there is a good option to backup what is on my server to another drive.

Could the other drive be connected via USB or eSata?

How do you guys(those that are left) backup your HP MSS?

Non-pooled drive/s.
When you add a drive, could be usb or esata would be faster, the console will ask to add it to the pool, just say no and add it as a non-pooled drive.
Then go the the backups page in the console and you will see the server that can then be backed up, the shared data can be backed up, if you have more then 2tb of shared data to backup then break it out to two non-pooled drives, have video and music on one drive and everything else on another.

I do this once a month and rotate out drives so I have two, I keep one off site, just in case.

This is the best way to backup the shares. Alex has a addin to backup the client backup database if you want to back that up as well, I have not used it as my clients do not keep data on there pc's, it's all in the shares.

Hope this helps, shout out if you have questions or concerns.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply Gardian.

I picked up a Mediasonic HUR1-SU3S2 HDD enclosure with eSata that I plan on using for my ex490 backup.

You will like that:
I checked it out at NewEgg:
Quote:
Power On / Off in synchronization with PC
S.M.A.R.T function with built-in thermal sensor control

Mine does not support (Power On / Off in synchronization with PC)
I sleep my server so I can only use it for backups/cloning/drive checking/etc.

Good Luck and enjoy! A couple of 2tb reds would go good with that :-)
