Good morning everyone (whoever's left),

I am on my EX490 doing some much needed maintenance of the files on it and I've come across something quite disturbing to me.
I am moving data from one shared folder (videos) to my other shared folder (uTorrent) and the transfer rate is about 4.09 MB/s!!!

Concerned, I ran HD Tach on my EX490 and each 2TB WD/Seagate drive returns an average read between 93 MB/s to 100 MB/s.

I did notice that HD Tach identifies my hard drives as Sata 150 (Sata 1 = 150MB/s ). The EX490 is capable of Sata 2 disk speeds (300MB/s).

Quote:
• Easy internal expandability with tool-free expansion bays allowing
you to add additional SATA I or SATA II disk drives. Or expand
your storage capacity externally using the 4 USB ports and the fast
eSATA port.

Here is what I am referring to:

Any suggestions on why the EX490 under HD Tach program is reporting my drives as a Sata 1 connection/speed?
lastly, any ideas why the horrible transfer speeds? I am not transferring across the network. This data is being moved along on my WHS EX490 box.

Thank you

I have to ask, although it shouldn't make any difference, are you running whs 2011 on your ex-490?
The only reason I ask is I just RDP into my whs v1 server and did a test file transfer.
I transferred a 2.1 gig video mpg from the video folder to a folder I make on the desktop. It took about 30 seconds, but I did not get the transfer speed box like you show.
I am running whs v1 on my server with all 2tb red drives.

If you are using whs 2011, maybe it is a driver issue for the backplane/harddrive interface.
Just guessing.
When I move my videos (which I rip on a HTPC box on the network) and transfer them across a giga network, I get about 50 mb/s transfer speed.
When I move file on the server they seem to move a little faster then across the network, but both are very fast in my mind.

No silver bullet to your question, but maybe this will help.
Good luck
EDIT: I just tried to copy that same video to my netbook on wireless and got 1.6 mb/s but the file transfer box looks more like the one you show, it has the drop down "more details" and shows the speed.

EDIT 2: I just used my netbook to do the same file copy on the server and it looks more like what your picture looks like, but the file is slow because it has to come to my netbook then back to the server.
Is this what you are doing?
When I rdp to the server and did the file transfer it only took 30 sec. see attached

Hey Gardian,

I am using WHSv1 still on my ex490.

I am currently transferring a file via wifi from my desktop upstairs to my ex490 downstairs, total of 9.74 GB and it's ETA is 30 minutes @ 5.xx MB/second but that's WiFi and I understand there are limitations.

In regards to how I do the file transfer...it's all on the server. I am moving files from one shared folder to another on the server. I am not moving any files from my hosts to the server.

\\ServerName\Videos to \\ServerName\Public

Basically, lets say you on MSS you have a bunch of shared folders but one of them is called Torrents and one is called Videos.

Once Torrent files download and are complete, for good house keeping you would move those completed files to the Videos shared folder right?

That's basically what I am doing and getting these incredibly slow transfer rates.

That's what I don't understand. If the file is being moved around on the server, why the delay?

You can look at specs all day.
But the bottom line is you need to account for bus speed, memory, cpu speed, drive cache, etc.
Just looking at the cache or speed of a drive is not enough.
Besides what is running in the background, such as duplication or a backup.
It is a hard number to track down.
I don't use torrent. But I would bet it is just another overhead to deal with.

Hey Ruben, I was thinking it's something to do with the overhead.

My EX490 is a Q9550s powered, 4gig with 4, 2TB green drives.

It's just frustrating getting such slow transfer speeds within the server itself.

I was told on a forum to try to cut rather than copy a file.

i just tried it. The results...

Try creating another shared folder without duplication and copy to it.
Also you need to make sure that the balancer is not running or backups at the same time.
In other words if You have recently added data the balancer may be running
In the whs console you can see when it ran last in the footer of the screen.
