A huge lighting strike just hit and I lost connection with my Mediasmart 490 server. I went to look and the lights were still on, but the health light was purple/pinkish in color. So I shut down the server and pushed the power button to restart it. NOTHING. No lights... nothing.

Why would the lights be on before shutting down, but now act dead? Please let me know what I can do to trouble shoot. I've searched the forum, but not finding anything.

Also, is there a way to get data off the drives? I haven't backed up for about 2 weeks. :( :( :( :( :(

By the way, I have plugged it into a different outlet and still no power.

I'm planning to order a new power supply tomorrow off ebay. But if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know. Thanks!

Luckily I was able to access files on the server drives and offload everything I hadn't backed up. I'm on a Mac and had to use the Terminal software to show "invisible" files in order to access them.

I have a few question. Were you using a surge protector/battery backup?

Also, I wonder if it blew a capacitor on the motherboard or the power supply.

You should investigate it once you start tearing into it. I'd be really curious to know what could have failed.

I had it on just a basic strip surge protector, so admittedly it wasn't well protected. How exactly should I go about investigating? Like I mentioned, all the lights were on until I powered down. Now it's dead. So that makes me think it isn't the power supply and I likely have and expensive paper weight.

I pulled out the boards and power supply. No visual signs of damage. But I'm not an electrician, so I don't exactly know what to look for. I took a couple pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I need to get this resolved, so I decided to order a new power supply. I figured it was worth a $56 gamble to see if that gets my server up and running again.

I'll post a followup when I receive the new power supply and get it installed.

The capacitors look fine on the motherboard. Maybe they failed inside the PSU?

Unknown.

Hope the new PSU gets you back up and running!

I just installed the new power supply... and still nothing. :(

The motherboard looked fine so I thought this would bring it back to life. Any other ideas? Otherwise I'll be shopping for a new option for data storage.

Is the new power supply coming on? At the minimum, the power supply should power up even though the rest of the unit might not. So if the power supply is not working it might mean the push button switch on the back is not properly working or the power cord somehow is bad now. I would also help if you post a pic of the bottom of the motherboard.

I already tested different power cords with no luck. And yes, nothing happens when I push the power button. I was also thinking the button could be the issue since the server had power before I shut it down. Although the power button worked when I held it to shut the server down, so who knows.

I'll pull it apart again tomorrow and inspect the motherboard more closely. I never removed all the screws to inspect the bottom of the board. I'll post a picture after I tear everything apart.

I pulled everything out and gave it thorough inspection. Nothing looks damaged and the button clicks and feels operational. I suppose it's possible the power supply I ordered is faulty, but I doubt it. The seller "kdmpower" has nothing but positive reviews. I have a volt tester, but not sure which pins to touch for testing.

I've attached a few pics of the bottom of the board and closeups of the power button.

As I recall The psu has a tiny fan. does that fan run.?
It could be I am thinking of the motherboard.

Nothing powers up.

After the lightning strike the server lights were on, but the health light was a pinkish color. I held the power button to shut it down and ever since it is a dead brick. Absolutely nothing happens when I plug it in and hit the power button. Even with the new power supply installed.
