I swear, I love whs v1 but I have the worst luck on PC restores.
This weekend I tried to clone a dual boot drive and failed, so I figured, I would try the backup restore.
Asus sabertooth v1 motherboard, 2 nics realtek 8111.
I tried xp 32 drivers, win7 32 and 64 bit drivers, all times it found the nics, I could see the realtek 8111, but it refused to find the server, I tried both nics one at a time and both at the same time, even tried direct connect, nothing.

I am about ready to turn the backups off, but I did get the to work on a netbook once.

I even got the newest pc restore from MS and burned it to disk.

Sometimes I Think restores are just not meant to be. I even thought I could load a basic load of win7 and then overwrite it with the backup, that was desperation, and not you can't because of system files.

No question, just a FYI I guess.
Everybody have a great holidays!!!!
And keep those important files backed up in folders as I can't trust the backups......

I have a very old pci nic card compatible with even windows me.
It never fails.
I use it on win 8 and 10 desktops.
No need for drivers on a flash drive.
Then of course is dealing with the extra reserved and hidden partitions.
Of course it won't work with a laptop though.

I can bet it is a 64bit os.

Yes, Two ssd drives, win7 pro 64 bit on both, gaming load on one and main load on the other.
Maybe I could find a usb nic that doesn't need drivers, that would be cool. But then it would need usb drivers. Argh!

Any idea what old nic card that is ?, I might be able to find one on ebay, I have the room in my desktop.

No worries, I keep my pc's loaded lite, so it didn't take long to get it back up and running (with all the files I needed on the server) :-)
Have great holidays!!!!

Well, I just couldn't leave it alone and did some digging. Thankyou "AustinBike" your thread got me going.
http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9767&hilit=realtek+8111

I saw where Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) was coming up all by itself. That is what mine was doing and it was a no go as well.

I did a google search for "Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet 32 bit drivers" and found this page:
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

I downloaded and put in three different folders on a thumbdrive:
106.13
7.097
2.0.2.8
I put each one in a separate folder called (1) (2) (3) and unzipped each one and deleted the zip files.
Put the PC restore Dual boot "newer" boot cd in and the usb, booted on the cd, it found the Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) so I told it to look on the usb drive and BANG! it found the correct driver and I was able to find the server.
Turns out the driver is really: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller must be some kind of different driver, but it worked and matched what was in my Device Manager for the lan!

Will be nice to use If need again. Faith restored lololololoolol
Hope this helps somebody...
Happy Holidays.

Well, here I am again. I have a win7 32 bit netbook that I needed to recover.
So I get the nic drivers from the web "they worked" booted the netbook from the newer WHS pc restore disk from MS. and it found the server Yah!
I told it to restore everything. About 45 mins. later it was done.
I rebooted the netbook, the drive was not bootable.
I tried to boot to the win7 install usb stick and do a repair, it said it found a problem but could not fix it.

I took the drive out and attached it to another pc, I noticed the "System Reserved" partition was not there. I'm assuming that is why it won't boot.

Any info/tips on how to restore a win 7 pc from the backups?
Is there a certain way to configure the backups on win7 that makes a difference when you go to recover one?

I am about ready to stop using the WHS backups and use windows built in backups and just point it to a folder on the server.

Any info would be great. I did search, but most found problem recovering the server with win7, which I have no problems with.
Happy New Year All!!!!

I think I might have the solution to this problem of not booting pc after a recovery.
I have gone into 2 pc's (1) a win7 64 bit and (2) a win 7 32 bit and burned the repair discs. I think these might be able to fix the no boot problem (guessing).
I realize when these server were new all we had was xp and win 7 is different.

Is there something or some special way to setup the client backups that would make a win 7 pc recovery work correctly?

Good thing everybody keeps all their data on the server.....

Happy new year 2016!!!!

Well, I wanted to post this just in case somebody waited all these years to try a real pc client restore and failed.

I finally figured out what happened and it started with when I setup the backups.
I had unchecked the system reserved partition (because I didn't think I would need it) lololoolol

Well after about an hour with BCDedit GUI version and Formatting the small partition it made and setting it as active, then booting up to the windows repair disk a couple of times it detected it and remade it.
So I have reconfigured how all my pc's backup to include the system partition.

Hope this helps someone else. Goodluck all....
