I see a lot of posts about using a > 2.1 TB drive in WHS, but what about on the client side? I just put in (4) 1-TB SSDs in my computer and I'm reinstalling everything. Will WHS back up and restore this computer correctly with the drives in RAID 0? I have the drives partitioned as one partition of 250 GB and the balance in one volume. Of course, Win7 added a couple extra small partitions as well.

Thanks!!

Well whsv1 will backup from newer os like win 7,win8 and win 10.
And I have 3tb drives installed on the client.
while you can just restore files, The hard part is using the pc restore cd to restore the os as well.

Besides the GPT.
You say you have 4 (1TB) setup in raid O. I'm not sure I'm getting how that is?
Do you have 2 set raid O for the OS and the 2 set raid O for storage?

I believe you could backup and restore a set of drives in a raid 0, The GPT part I am wondering about.
Assuming you were to pre-format the 2 drives that needed to be restored GPT/raid O, would whs try to reformat them? I don't know as I have only done 1 recovery on a normal drive.

But if your drives are set raid O, you should not need to back them up for recovery, just for a missing file or two if you hit the delete key on something you really wanted.
It is my understanding with Raid O you are set, if one drive fails, you just replace the bad drive and rebuild the raid.
Or am I thinking raid 1? Raid O is mirror correct? It has been a while since I setup a Raid pair....

That is why I setup my win2012E box with 2 ssd in raid O so I would not have to worry about the OS, I still back it up to a 1 tb spinner, just in case, but I'm not using GPT on any drive yet.

Let us know how it goes, I have never heard of anybody (besides MAC) using GPT.

Thx for the thought and good luck...

Gardian,

You're thinking RAID 1. RAID 0 has no fault tolerance.

I have essentially a 4 TB drive that is partitioned into a 250 GB drive, for the operating system, and the rest is for file storage, movies, music, games, etc. As far as the operating system is concerned (as far as I know), the RAID 0 set of four drives looks like just one drive, although it is partitioned.

So one of the "drives" is > 3 TB on the client.

Will WHSv1 back it up? And will I be able to restore it?

If you read my post.
Yes it will back it up.
Now you do need the storage space for the large drive backups.
But to use the pc restore cd is another question.
If you use the newer os systems and have uefi bios , You run into hurdles.
Like enabling usb on boot (disable safe mode)
Dealing with the multiple hidden partitions ( use the advanced mode)
Then if it is 64 bit system finding a nic driver to boot from.

Now if you want to recover a client from scratch without the pc restore cd. Then just restore the os with pc factory disks.
Then copy over your data from the backups.

In my case I never have used the pc restore cd because if the system is hosed then the backups of the os are probably hosed.
So I have always installed a clean os from scratch. Then copy over the data manually from the backups.
Even with xp or vista I did this.

Yes, sorry about that, Raid 1 is the land I live in because I don't trust being able to restore.
I have had two fails out of 3. Motherboard/bluescreens....
I do agree with "Ruben Rocha" on clean reloads.
Raid 0 GPT restore, that would be amazing for whs v1, shows what a great setup it was.
I would image it , just to be on the safe side. I image all my pc's with a base load and keep all the data on the server.
I do backups, just in case, but don't count on them....
Good luck!
