I am in need of some expert help, hopefully someone here can help me like you have helped so many others.

Recent relevant info:

- EX490 ran fine for over 5 years w/o issue
- One day it was mysteriously off and would not power on
- Assuming PSU, I ordered a replacement, which initially worked
- Roughly 10 days later, it turned off again
- I was only able to get it to boot with the system (Seagate) drive in
- With my other drives in, it would "try" to turn on, then last about 2 seconds and restart in an infinite loop
- With just the system drive in, I booted and was able to run normally, access the Server Console, etc.
- Appearing that the PSU didn't have enough "juice" to power all 3 drives any longer, I assumed it was defective and sent it back for replacement
- Seller said it "tested fine", but sent me another one anyway
- Trying PSU #2, the WHS turns on (and stays on), but it does not appear to boot

So, I have combed through the incredibly helpful forums here and tried all the suggestions I could find.

Here is my current status:
As soon as I plug it in, the network health light is white for a blip, then turns solid red.
There are no other colors or flashing codes or anything.
The power button on the back does nothing (I can only get it to power off by unplugging).
The Status/Recovery button also seemingly does nothing, the health light remains solid red.
The above behavior persists even when there are no drives present. (this was most worrisome)
(Just to cover bases, I ran a disk check on each of my drives via enclosure and they came back fine.)
The front 'network' light never turns on, and neither do the LAN lights on the rear port.
I see a link light on my router, but never an actual entry in the DHCP table.

To me, this is pointing to a dead/dying mobo.
Is it worth buying one of the $80 "Debug boards" to see what is happening (i.e. boot sequence, BIOS setup screen)?
Any other things that I should try before calling it dead and going after a similar used box on ebay?

Thank you for your time and assistance

I would think it is a drive.
Install the S.M.A.R.T addin and check the drives.

I thought that initially too - but if it is a drive, then why would I also get the same boot non-responsiveness when no drives are present at all?
It seems like it can't even start recovery mode like I would expect in that situation.

I can't access the WHS at all at this point, but can I run the S.M.A.R.T. add-in on a different machine (does that even make sense)?

I think you may be right on the bad board, but, Question, have you ever had it apart, except when you changed the power supply?

The last thing I would try is, re-seat the backplane for the drives and take a blank (known good drive) put it in the bottom bay and try to fire it up. If it still acting like your talking, I would say check ebay for a spare.

If you have done anything with the cpu/ram recently, then I would be suspect of that.

Good Luck Shout back and let us know how it's going....

There is a reason why I have (4) X-510, one because I'm a little crazy :-) and I have spare parts.

I had never opened it up until I took it apart to change the PSU.
Since I am on my second one of those, and have pulled everything apart to inspect the mobo and everything inside, it has now been taken apart a few times. Right now it is half apart :)
No CPU or RAM mods have been made,

I tried your suggestion on the backplane reseat and known good drive - no luck.
The same thing happens where I can hear the HD spin up but the front light is solid red and the network does nothing.

A VGA Adapter is showing up tomorrow, so I will see what is happening finally during boot.
Maybe that will give a clue.

I am not hopeful that my current mobo is going to pull through.
To begin my search for a replacement on ebay, do you know if I can use the mobo out of a EX485 or EX487 - or can it only be a EX490 ?
Alternatively, if I found a box that simply needed a new PSU I could move my new PSU over and start using that one (hopefully) with my existing drives.

Any tips on how to find replacement hardware is appreciated 8)

I would stick with the 490, the 480's had there own problems.
Goodluck.
