sjpoundall - glad to hear you're up and running! Yes, those faulty PSUs can be very tricky to diagnose. In most cases, the machine is just dead. Other times they power on only to turn themselves off or reboot at random intervals.

Those folks at Overtek are great!

Gardian - thank you for the kind words about Home Server SMART. I'm happy to provide it. I hope the latest update is working better for you. Several folks reported bugs in the April release of Home Server SMART Classic, which were remedied in the May 19 release.

Matt

No problem, The newest version of smart is working fine. I don't have a pc or server in the house without Smart on them.
Thank you for all your time.
You saved my workhorse PC and my backup server with early warnings.
Mediaservers still rock! :encore:

MSS powers up and running with replacement PSU but now have another issue: :(

As previously reported I removed both of the original drives from the MSS and hooked up to another computer via an external disk case and checked with WindowSMART 2015 with the following results:
Drive 1 - Primary HDD (containing the SYS and DATA partitions) - healthy status

Drive 2 - Secondary HDD - Status Critical with the following highlighted:
772 bad sectors detected
Large Pending bad sector count - 34 sectors waiting to be reallocated
Disk health critical
Uncorrectable sectors detected - 34 uncorrectable sector errors

I ran a CHKDSK /F on the secondary HDD and all seemed fine for a while with both disks back in the server with WHS reporting both disks as healthy for the past week or so. Until yesterday...
WHS console was now reporting a problem with the health of the secondary HDD.

So I have added a new third drive into bay 3 (Drive 3) a 1TB WD Red WD10EFRX to the storage pool yesterday via the WHS console which all installed ok.
MSS has solid aqua white light bars on bays 1,2 and 3 and all the health indicator lights at the base of the MSS are solid aqua white.

The problem came when I tried to remove the unhealthy Drive 2 HDD from the storage pool.
All seemed to be going ok with removing the disk from the pool with the WHS reporting that this might take several hours to complete.
Progress bar got to about 80-90% complete so left it running overnight. When I checked on it this morning it seems to have stopped before completion with around ten homeserver.exe application error windows cascading down the screen with the message : no debugger found , and the WHS console software not responding requiring a reboot of the MSS.
Logging back into the WHS console after a reboot shows all three drives still present in the storage pool and Drive 2 showing a healthy status again :?
With the new drive 3 installed there is now enough space for folder duplication which I have now turned on and is currently in the process of duplicating the Shared Folder for Music
This is still in progress - with only one of the music tracks so far generating a file conflict error: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error
Not sure what should I try next ?

If it were me.
I would yank the bad drive out of the server reboot.
Then in the console remove the now phantom drive.
turn on duplication and let it settle down.
It apparently is so bad it will not function correctly nor will the console function correctly.
Then connect the bad drive to your pc and manually attempt to move as many files as you can back to the server.

PS:
Never rely solely on the whs console to report drive health.
I would trust the SMART addin more.
I don't understand why it is not installed already.
According to your screen print.

PSS:
You probably will need to add yet another drive to the server for folder duplication to work for you.
Since you will be removing a drive.

As Gardian and Ruben Rocha point out, please install the Home Server SMART Classic add-in, available here: http://www.dojonorthsoftware.net/Downloads.html -- make sure you get HSS Classic, not HSS 2015, as Classic is designed specifically for WHS v1. Take the MSI file that you download and deposit it in your server shared folders under \\server\Software\Add-ins. The Console should then alert you to the fact that an add-in is available for installation, and you can then install it.

HSS Classic reads the SMART attributes directly from the drives. Windows, on the other hand, checks only to see if a SMART attribute "flips the bit" to a failed state. Oftentimes, by the time this happens, the disk can be far too gone to do much about it. HSS Classic is designed to give you an early warning, and in most cases you'll see disk health issues popping up long before a disk actually dies. It won't detect every problem -- disks can, and do, die suddenly without any warning. MOST, however, do give warning signs that trouble is afoot.

If you are unsure of how to interpret the SMART results, you can export them to a text file and paste them here. This can be done by selecting the disk in question, selecting the Advanced button, then Export > As Text and then copying the contents of that file here. You'll get output similar to this:

** This value indicates whether the SSD itself reports that it supports the TRIM function. This does not indicate that TRIM is necessarily active. For TRIM to operate the SSD
