Hi... I'm new here and not very much of a techie, but hope I can get some help.
I have an HP EX 470 that now has three drives installed as storage adding up to 3 1/2 TB. I just purchased a 4 TB WD Green drive to add to my last slot and use as backup. When going through the process, I got a message that the drive needed to be partitioned. There are 3 laptops connected to the network with the server.
This might be a silly question, but how do I physically partition the drive, and how do I do it so the whole drive is used for backup.

Thanks for any help.
Glenn

Well,
If you are using whs v1.
It only supports drives =<2tb for the storage pool.
Now if you add it as a backup drive you could get 3-4TB.
However if it is a a advanced format drive. Then it probably will bark back at you.
What you could try is format it in your pc and add it to the server as a backup without formatting.

Hi Glenn

I tried to add a 4TB drive as a backup drive but it wouldn't work with WHS V1. My EX470 would recognize the 4TB backup drive but once I got over 2TB of files backed up to the 4TB drive the EX470 would hang. Removing the 4TB drive would allow me to restart my EX470.

Okay... I understand, thanks for the quick responses.
Can I update WHS version to a later version and if so, what are the steps involved?

I would save that 4 tb drive for something else. I tried two WD red 4 tb drives formatted GPT as non-pooled drives for backup, worked great till the data went over 2tb and they hung and went raw and I ended up having to send them in to get replaced.
You could install WHS 2011 but you will need the VGA cable and I don't think the ex-470 would be worth it.

Plus, IMHO, I'm a green drive hater, a greed WD was the first WD drive I had fail on me.
I use all red drives now.

Good Luck.
