I'm creating a new thread here - does anyone know if a battery backed UPS can be made to work with a MediaSmart?
Specifically can it be set in the server to shutdown in a controlled fashion?

Yes, you can use an APC or CyberPower UPS. Both of these come with a USB cable that plugs in to your MediaSmart Server. After connecting, you MAY need to reboot; you shouldn't need to do this, but this ensures Windows modifies its power policies to go from an "always plugged in" mode to offer a plugged in mode and a battery mode. You can then define your power settings -- what to do when the battery gets to a low level and then what to do when the battery gets to a critically low level.

I use UPSes with my EX487, EX490 and EX495 and they are all configured to shut down gracefully. I don't even need to use the software that comes with the UPS. The power settings available in Windows handle the job just fine.

Thanks Matt.
Do you use a "smart" UPS (Power Factor Corrected) or a regular UPS ?
The "smart" UPS are used in regular servers which require a pure sine wave - that is what I'm told by a lot of techs although you never seem to hear much about it when you read the UPS manufacturers promotional stuff.
The Cyberpower power factor corrected UPSs are reasonably priced at around $120 - the APC Smart UPSs cost over $300.

I have used the CyberPower UPS Software for Windows on WHS in the past and it work but did notice the service for their software often does not always start when the server boots so if you install their software just keep that in mind when you reboot your server.
