Desperate !!!! Hi I have an HP EX490 and I'm trying to make a Server Recovery and finds me Server, took 3 days and I have read a lot about it and I've tried everything what you say, not if I let something but did not know what to do.
I tried with Windows 7, Windows XP in Safe Mode, I tried connecting a cable directly and switch and can not find anything.
I already do not know what else to do and I need to make a recovery urgently by the management of the WHS console does not work me and I can not create photo albums.
Please help me !!!!!! Thank you very much !!!!!

This is assuming all your drives are good. If you try to do a recovery with even one bad drive, things can go south fast.
The usb to sata dock and another pc is a good way to make sure the drives are good first before you try the recovery. Remember that the bottom drive needs to be marked somehow so it gets back in that bottom bay, that is the OS drive and only works in that bay.
If you have a bad main drive, which if it is the original seagate is probably is, then you would need to get a new drive for that bottom bay, a 1 or 2 tb drive and then with all other drives in place do the recovery "NOT" factory reset.
Hopefully you have some kind of backup of your data as only 1 copy on the server is a good way to lose everything, if you don't have a backup, if it was me I would be tempted to just pull drives and make a copy of the shares before going any farther, but that's your call. I don't know how much data you have.
All this being said.

All I can do is repeat what has worked for me and others in the past:
Safe mode is good if you have virus/malware/firewall software that gets in the way and all the drives need to be in the server to do a Recovery "not" a factory reset..

1. Take a deep breath and slow down, I know the first time I tried to do a recovery I was at warp speed and these systems take how long they take, so don't rush it.
2. An XP 32 bit pc is always a safe bet, I keep a laptop just for recoveries, no extra software on it, virus/malware/firewall stuff can mess you up. Disable the wifi nic or extra nic if it is a desktop with two..
3. Copy the contents of both the server recovery disc and software disk into folders on the desktop so you can find them easy.
4. Direct connect the server and pc you are using with a normal cat5/6 cable, no switch/no router.
5. Have the server off, and run the server recovery setup and follow the instructions, (this assumes you have the correct server recovery disc that came with the server.
6. When it gets to the turn server on and wait for the red/blue/red/blue/red/blue (I wait for 3 sets of red/blue before I do the button) then use a paperclip to press and release the button in the small hole, lower front, it should stop the red/blue and go into recovery mode, click next at the software prompt.
7. It should find the server in a few minutes, then pick recovery "NOT" factory reset.
8. If it doesn't find it, start over and try again, sometimes it take a couple of tries.
9. Assuming it finds the server, it will take about 30 mins minimum to lay down the new OS and then it has to rebuild everything.
10. At some point after the recovery is complete you will need to reboot, that will be a good time to get it onto the network so it can pull updates from the internet.

Hint: when you get to any prompt to reboot or click OK, I have found if you wait a couple of mins to let the system finish writing helps.

Good luck and shout back on how it's going or if you have any questions. There are lots of great people here that have done lots of recoveries and factory resets.

I myself, do backups of my shares and if I have problems that I can't easily fix, I will just do a factory reset and then copy my data back, but this takes time and I only have a couple TB of data.

If you don't have a backup, then thinking about how to make one should be next.
Cloud
External drive/s
Internal NON-POOLED drives.

thank you very much for answering !!!! I really want "factory reset" but when looking at the server can not find the server, I do all the steps as I put in your instructions, disable all antivirus, firewall ... I've even set up a dhcp with tftpd32 server and looking at log, the Pc client gives an ip 169.37.37.37 and will assign the server when this message is repeated 169.37.37.38:
"DHCP: Proposed address 169.37.37.38
Rcvd rqst Msg DHCP for IP .0.0.0.0, Mac 00.26.2D ... "
and this always be repeated but I do not quite asginarle the IP and therefore fail the file via tftp ... But not to do but my patience is running out !!!!!
That can be ????

Not quite clear on what procedures your following but compare what your doing with what is in this guide: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/wiki/in ... _and_EX495

Are you certain you want a Factory Recovery because a Factory Recovery better known as a Factory Reset which does not preserve your data. Or do you mean Server Recovery which does preserve your data.

Also is the NIC on the server actually functional because without that your not going to get very far.

Last thing I would like to mention and Gardian touched on it about the Hard Drives being in good condition. It only takes 1 drive to act up to cause WHS to pinch a fit. So have you tried pulling the drives out one at a time and connect them to another computer and run a CHKDSK on them? A lot of times just doing that will resolve issues with the server

Hi, I am following this guide and I'm stuck where the dhcp server (tftpd32) given ip's to the server and the client, in my case the customer gives the dhcp server 169.37.37.37 and 169.37.37.38 proposes but it is not assigned and not because it is as if he did not arrive the request to the server and I've uninstalled the connector software, antivirus and firewall !!!! Add the log for ye see him:

Lets eliminate the simple stuff first:

(1) Can you test the cable your using between the client and the server to make sure its working properly.
- Just use it to connect the client to a switch or router and confirm you get network connectivity

(2) Verify the NIC on the server is actually active. Colors aside there should be one solid LED and another one Blinking
- You can see this when the server is connected to the client, Switch or Router
- Again if the NIC is not functional then all this will be done in vane

(3) Verify your using the correct Server Recovery/Install Disk for your server. It should be clearly marked as being for the EX490 or EX495.
- The Disk for the Data Vault X510 will work as both servers have the same motherboard.

(4) If everything checks out above then try backing out the bottom drive and turn the server on.
It will boot into its recovery mode and when you see the health light blinking the recovery blink code then insert the drive back into the server and run the Server Recovery Software on the client.
Pressing that Small Status/Recovery Button is always a pain.

I will also tell you that the TFTP method HP Chose to use can be a big pain in the butt. Once you get it working its a fairly smooth process.

Oh man that's not good. I do have a question though and that is how were you able to read the TFTP information because the EX470 does not use TFTP to perform the server recovery as it uses WinPE. The only models which use TFTP are the LX19x, EX49x, X310 and X510.

The next question is to confirm the exact server model you have in your possession and even that may not be easy because all the components in the servers are interchangeable between the EX47x, EX48x, EX49x and X510 and to some degree the X310.

First on the bottom of the server is the HP Product label which will only identify what was in the server originally but if changes were made then unfortunately the only way to determine the actual server you have is to look at the motherboard and even then only an experienced person who has worked with the various MSS boards will be able to help you identify the server you have.

As I have mentioned previously the recovery disks are server specific and the big difference is in the Motherboard.

It makes no sense looking for Recovery Media until you know for sure exactly what you have for a server and without full knowledge of the history of the server it really puts you in a tough spot.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Once your up and running I would suggest you dowload and install the Free SMART Add-in. As far as I'm concerned it's a must have. It will warn you when a drive is going bad so you will have time to change it out before it completely fails.
Again, backup is a must, these servers are awesome, but they can go south and take all your data with them.

Shout out if you have any more questions. Good luck and enjoy.

Hey juanlle,

Happy to hear you were able to get the correct disks and get your server up and running. Also looked at your link and see that a link appears on HP's website so once they notice it then it will most likely be removed due to copy write issues.
