I have a ex490 with whs1.
I have been having issues with lan speed and I suspect the drive balancer may be the culprit.
Currently all my folders are duplicated.
I have backups so if needed turning off duplication is no issue.

Is it as simple as turning off duplication?
Or is there a service I need to stop?
If it is a service what is it called?

I recommend against disabling the service. If you don't care about data duplication then you can turn it off per shared folder.

I have to ask, your network modem/router/switches are giga and you are using cat5e or cat6 I would assume? Lan speed can be a bugger to trace down.
Have you remoted into the server and pulled up task manager to see what network load it is showing?

Just spitballing, hope you are able to fine the problem... Goodluck

It is more of a once in a while issue where a hd video studders on both my media players.
I suspect that the red drives read/write speed slows down when the balancer runs.
Due to multiple processes access the drives.
Since I have no way to know when it runs.
I wanted to disable it for a while and see if it still does it.

Yes all giga and hard wired cat5e cable.
I have checked task manager and cpu does seem to be less than 10%.
But like I said I can't tell when the balancer is running.
Nor when I have the problem by the time I remote to the sever the problem stops.

I do make backups of the data.

So will turning off duplication stop the balancer from running?

There are numerous threads on media streaming stuttering, a search should turn up discussion on those few users that chose to disable Drive Extender and had some success doing so.

Just a update.
Normal video ts files play fine with the balancer disabled for the most part.
However iso-bdrom files still skip but I think it has improved some.
I still think it is partially the red drives can't handle the read speed.
I never had the issue with wd eads drives.

I am just curious. Are your RED Drives in the external enclosure or are they in the MSS?

They are in the ex490.
I changed the system drive back to a wd black.
And the other 3 bays are still wd reds.
the externals are wd reds also but they are only for backup drives.
In fact they are turned off most of the time.
Also the reason I suspect the reds is because my cpu even when playing media occasional peaks at about 50% on one of the cores and the network performance never goes much above 10% at least according to task manager.
Now my memory does get to around 80% and it won't go back down even when idle unless I reboot the server.
Since I have stock memory I was thinking of getting a 4gb stick even though I know I will only gain 1 mb
So that just may be my next step or start buying wd red pro drives.
