Hey all,

Hopefully this is an easy one, but I wanted to ask just in case.

I suspected one of the HDDs was failing in my MSS. I have 4 WD 2 TB Green drives. I gracefully shutdown the MSS and began testing each drive with Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diag software (on my main desktop).

Low and behold, one of the hard drives is reporting an error. I have a new one coming in tomorrow.

I was think of installing the new drive, powering up the system, and letting it do its thing (not sure what "its thing" may be though...)

Is this the correct approach?

Any information would be amazing! Thank you!

PS: I would like to add that i do not do ANY client to server backups. The only data the MSS has are movie files in one share with folder duplication enabled.

PPS: I found this:

Does that seem like a sound course of action?

You should first try the proper method.
Login to the console and select to remove the drive
Let it do its thing, may take several hours or longer depending on how bad the drive is
Then replace the drive and again use the console to add it back. That will just be a short time while it formats the drive
Then you probably will take a hit on the cpu for a few days while the balancer works on the new drive

WHile you're at it, get the Home Server SMART Add-In to monitor your drives in the server.

Yes, that's the Add-In I recommended.

Thank you, Alex! Everything seems like it is up and running and I got the add-in installed.

I just got a report of a warm disk! Glad to know it is working...

Also, do you recommended any add-ins that balances the files across all 4 disks?

Thanks again! I appreciate your help!

I'm glad things seem to be working well for you. I don't recommend or use any of the drive balancing tools, WHS is designed such that as long as you have duplication enabled, you shouldn't lose any files in the event of a disk failure. Forcing WHS to redistribute data across the disks simply makes some graphs look prettier, I don't believe it serves any useful purpose.
