Hiya. I have 2 Ex487 machines and I am trying to restore them to new with the Version 3 software. I have successfully made the device boot into recovery mode but the software says it has failed each time i try to restore at step 2 of 4. It has a help button which just says unrecognized error when I press it.

Im confident it is discoverable since I see the default restoration name in a mac scanner and an IP is assigned.

Anyone have any hints on this?

Just a quick note. The 3.0 disks are server specific. Can you confirm the version your using was actually written for your specific server. There are 3 versions of the HP 3.x server software written for the EX47x, EX48x and EX49x.

I have the CDs I bought them online someplace about a year ago for this project and never got to it. I don't know how to determine if they are the correct ones. Anyone have a clue on that?

If they are HP Original Disks they will have the Server Model Number printed on the disks.

Your awesome. I took my version 2.0 disks and it found it immediately. It is possible to get it to version 3.0 or 3.1 right?

I have some disks that are for ex490 and version 3.0 that are not seeing the machine. Any chance the 3.1 HPx310 disks will see it?

What about Windows home server 2011? I have that also that i bought thinking id use a regular pc. Im only interested in using the backup features. I never use the media stuff.

First the HP Server Disks as I have already mentioned are Server Model Specific due to the differences in hardware. All the HP Home Servers shipped with WHS v1 which does a great job with client backup and recoveries for operating Systems XP, Vista and Win7. I can't comment on Win2K or Win NT as I do not have a clue on those OS's. It remains to be seen if WHS v1 will work with Win8 but my gut says probably not but who knows and its not clear to me if WHS2011 will work properly with Win8 but I imagine it may but I will defer that to those who are actively playing with those two systems.

If you perform a site search for installing WHS2011 on an MSS you should easily be able to find what others have to say about it. My personal opinion is to keep the original OS on the HP Home Servers and use the WHS2011 on a different unit.

I currently run WHS v1 on EX470's and recently moved my primary WHS v1 from an HP ProLiant to a new build to free up the ProLiant to run Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials but my opt to install the newer version soon to be released. I also have WHS2011 running on a server which I have named Highlander which I put online in July 2011 and use Stablebit Drive Pool with so far knock on wood has been running quite well.

Should you opt to install WHS2011 on say your EX48x I would urge you to expose the SMI area and backup the SMI files for safe keeping. Some have reported after installing WHS2011 on EX47x and EX48x that they were unable to reinstall the original OS that came with the server because of a SMI Failure. The SMI Area which is hidden is key to putting the EX47x and EX48x and I believe the LX Series MSS units into their recovery mode.

Regardless of which HP Home Server you chose to install WHS2011 that the LEDS will not function properly and this alone may prove to be annoying expecially seeing the health light constantly blinking blue and the drive lights not being lit up. Someone did work on this but I have no idea how successful they were or if it would work on all units or not so find out what you can on that issue if the LED's are of great concern for you.

Should you have additional questions please feel free to voice them and I will do my best to help you. There are many others who may also respond as well but the important thing here is to ensure you have the best possible experience with the units you currently use.
