I'm having a problem with my EX485 freezing up and not being able to connect to it. Everything runs fine after I do a hard reboot and the only thing that I can think of being a problem is heat. I checked with SMART and the only problems it detects is that two of the disks are running hot (46c and 47c). About 20 to 30 minutes later it is frozen and I'm unable to access it. It doesn't report any bad sectors or anything. The server has being giving me a decent amount of trouble lately and I'm getting a bit frustrated. So I have a couple of questions. The first one is if anyone has any good ideas on how to fix this problem. The next question is if I were to put the disks into just a normal Windows 7 PC, would I be able to pull the data off of them even though some of the data folders are split between drives? And would this do any damage to the disks? I only use the server to store media so I'm just considering taking the disks out and putting them into one of my PCs. Thanks for any help!

Hi skmastaz welcome to the forums,

While heat is always a concern it may not be be whats causing your issues. One thing you can do is to make a Remote Desktop Connection to your server and run the task manager to see what if anything might be placing a load on your CPU. Also check the C: Drive to see how much space is available on it because sometimes WHS and its logs will fill up the C: Drive and you can remove the old logs or all of them after you review them or back them up for review. The Event Logs may also help you figure out where problems exist and then once your done reviewing them just delete them to free up additional space on the C: Drive. Remember WHS itself exists on a very small 20GB partition on the System Drive and when it fills up it leaves less space for things like virtual memory to function thus slowing things down. Its amazing when you properly free up space on the System Partition the performance boost you can achieve.

So it comes down to what the CPU Load is and if something is putting a heavy load on the CPU it can effect the performance and space on the System Drive. While heat is something to be concerned with I do believe you should look at the other things I point out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't know I could remotely connect to the server that way. I checked out the task manager and there is, at max, 17% usage of the CPU and there is 10 gigs left on the C: drive. I'm not sure where to find the event logs, though.

If you have 10 GB free on your system drive then thats a good thing so you can rule that out and there should also be no issue with the logs eating up the space either but you can check the Event Logs to what information they might contain.
