Hi All,

A couple months ago, my EX485 flashed a red Health LED. Connected via Remote Desktop, looked at the alert, and it said the system drive (original 750GB that came with the server) had a problem. Went through the repair utility, all was ok. Problem occurred again, repaired, all was ok. Now server has started a reboot cycle. Health LED flashes red/blue a few times, powers off, repeats.

If I pull all of the drives out, it boots up and has a white Health LED. Put the drives back in their appropriate slots, and back to the reboot process.

I'm thinking I have a dead system drive. What is the process to replace that drive without losing the data on the other 2 drives? (I'm also off to ask the Google.)

Thanks,

I put a new drive into the system drive bay, and ran through the Server Recovery program. It gets through "recovering data" and then the next step, but is now stopped at "An error occurred in Windows Home Server Setup. Please verify that both this computer and our home server have network connectivity, then click Back to retry. Or, click Net to close the Setup wizard and run Setup again. To restart the Setup wizard, reinsert the Windows Home Server Connector CD."

The compter I'm running the recovery from has connectivity, and I can RDP to the server via the IP address. When I do, it comes back with "Identity of the remote computer cannot be verified" and shows as "HPSERVER". That is not the name I had given it back when I first set it up a couple years ago. I did click Back & run it 1 more time, but got the same error message.

What do I do now? I thought I had seen a post where this occurred, but can't find it now. (And what is default password again?)

Thanks,

I restarted the Recovery process this morning. It gets through Configuring your hardware (green check) and Recovering your data (green check). At the Starting Windows Home Server step, the server seems to have rebooted a couple (now about 6) times. All LEDs (Power, Network, Health, and all 3 drive LEDs) are alternating in brightness (1 second bright, 1 second dim, all are blue). Is this normal?

After a few reboots as above at the "Starting Windows Home Server" step, with the alternating blue LEDs, I get the error again "An error occurred in Windows Home Server Setup.." Server now rebooting with solid blue Power and Network, flashing blue Health, and no LEDs for any of the 3 drives. Then rebooted to have all LEDs alternating blue brightness for 2 min, then rebooted to solid blue Power & Network, flashing Health, no drive LEDs for 1 minute.

Rebooting every 2 minutes or so now, and alternating between the LED states above.

Is this normal?!?!

Thanks,

So after a couple calls to HP Tech Support, it appears I may have made a wrong choice for my new System Drive. I grabbed a WD 1TB Caviar Green drive, without knowing it is an EARX model. When the support guy told me it could be part of the problem, I remembered reading about staying away from EARS drives and making sure you have EADS drives (both my data drives area EADS).

Support guys suggested doing a Factory Reset with the new EARX drive - with NO data drives installed - and see what happens. The Factory Reset appears to be working ok - I actually got to the part where you name the server and give it a password etc. I was getting an error before that step when trying to do a Recovery with the data drives installed. The Factory Reset is now complete, and the support guy said if it worked, I could just start copying data back to the server 1 data drive at a time (copy from drive 1 to System Drive, then add Drive 1 to the server pool, copy Drive 2 over, then add Drive 2 to the pool).

What do you all suggest?
1. Should I try to do a Recovery with the Data Drives installed with the current EARX System Drive?
2. Should I let the server sit for a day (as it currently sits with only the new EARX System Drive) to make sure my rebooting problem is gone, then try copying the data over?
3. Should I get a different drive to use as a System Drive and try a Recovery with the Data Drives installed?

Thanks,

Make sure you've read this guide on Advanced Format drives. http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/12 ... me-server/
