Lately I've been experience poor tranfer speeds (read only) off my GBE connected MSS. I tried checking drivers, flowcontrol, firmware, reboots you name it. Write performance on the network was a clean 30-50mb/s and read performance was a dismal 13-15mb/s. I ran into this article:

That suggests vistas's on the fly network tuning may choke down large transfers. Sure enough, the 10 seconds it took to type in the commands fixed my transfer speed issues and I'm back up to 50-85mb/s on large transfers according to robocopy/vistas details tab.

Just ran some more tests, was able to sustain 82-83mb/s on multigigabyte transfers as illustrated below.

I doubt there's more to get out of this box as we're hitting the maximum read rate from the drives in the mss themselves.

What a great little box. If you've been thinking about getting a GBE switch do it, they're not too expensive (I use Netgear) and adapters (my pc has an integrated Broadcom controller).

I have never gotten anywhere near those numbers and I have excellent gigabit switches, cables and router.

What kind of numbers are you getting now for read and write performance on your GBE?

Actual speed according to Vista file transfer dialog box----I did not use a theorhetical performance benchmark or application----just what Vista actually said was transferring......

There may be something to this.....

I'm running Vista Ultimate SP1 32 Bit.....With the very latest drivers for my NIC (Realtek onboard 8111) and firmware for my router (D-Link DIR-655). And I am NOT using Jumbo Frames which have caused me issues in the past

According to the Vista File Transfer Dialog Box drop down---when you are actually transferring a file....

With Vista Auto Tuning enabled:
Copy to WHS averaged 1-2 MB a second
Copy From WHS averaged 9-11 MB a second

With Vista Auto Tuning disabled:
Copy to WHS averaged 3-4 MB a second
Copy From WHS averaged 16-20 MB a second

I ran about 20 tests with files between 1GB and 4GB using both settings (I stopped each file transfer when it appeared the speed had averaged out)

I think you're off to a good start. But you have ways to go. Out of the gate to 1GB I get about 50-60mb/s writing to the EX470. After 2gb it averages 40, and 3gb+ (i've tested up to 50gb) It will average about 30-35mb/s writing to the EX470.

Now reads however hold steady at 80mb/s according to Robocopy. The vista pull down details tab goes from 80-100mb/s on reads. Further while I transfer under the task manager network tab I see 60-70% utilization on my GBE.

Do you have flow control enabled on your adapters? Both on the EX470 and the vista boxes? How about driver updates on both sides? Lastly I found this online:

Remote Differential Compression (RDC) allows data to be synchronized with a remote source using compression techniques to minimize the amount of data sent across the network.

Many pre-Windows Vista computers and devices are not compatible with RDC which makes transferring files across a network slower for a Windows Visa computer because it’s trying to use RDC.

You could be hitting that as well.

I always get much faster speeds unless a huge transfer. Small 5GB transfers are over 200mbs, but when I do large ones like over 50GB I see the average transfer rate drop to around 80mbs. I know the burst rates easily surpass 500mbs to/from any of my PCs(not my cheap celeron laptop though, but it only has a 100mbs connection) and the MSS.

By default, Vista reserves 20 percent of the connection bandwidth for QoS traffic handled by the QoS Packet Scheduler. The reserved bandwidth is still available to other programs unless a program specifically requests priority bandwidth. Vista will then restrict the best effort traffic to 80 percent of the bandwidth so that high priority traffic can be accommodated. I haven't done any before / after tests with QOS on or off but for those of you on 100mbps networks 20% may give you a noticable boost if vistas QOS is choking you down. By default i believe it is enabled. It was in mine and I know I didn't turn it on.

Flow control was enabled on both....

My entire network is Vista which all have RDC and WHS which is based upon Server 2003 and I assume it has RDC as well as 2003 got it in version R2....

But hey----I'll try it as your original tip basically doubled my actual file transfer speeds

Might want to disable QOS too. I posted the link to the guide earlier in the thread. I havn't done any back to back tests with QOS on or off but according to the stuff online vista reserves 20% bandwidth if QOS is enabled.

I just did a big test, 94.4GB file transfered from the EX470 to my XPS. It took 21 minutes averaging 80mb/s.

Didn't notice a difference.....

How is your WHS configged----how many drives??

It has 3 drives, a 500 and two 750s. I upgraded the ram to 2GB and have a LE-1640. I didn't notice any significant transfer speed difference with the CPU upgrade.

Just for kicks have you tried a direct connect? If you have a static ip on your WHS you should be a able to direct connect with a cable, no switch, and try the test. Something must be holding you back if you're getting a few megabytes per second uploading and only 17 downloading.

Have you tried turning flow control off on both ends?

Are you using CAT6 cables?

Have you tried transfering from one of your clients to another client?
