Just thought I'd share my recent experience with setting up my HP MediaSmart Server. I've been unable to remotely connect to my server since I set it up last night. I read in the documentation to verify that your ISP hasn't blocked Port 80. A quick call verified that my ISP had port 80 blocked. I upgraded to a commercial line and all is good now.

Usually if port 80 is blocked, you can still connect through the https port which is 443.

So instead of going to http://blah.homeserver.com you can go to https://blah.homeserver.com usually gets around it.

Wow. How much did that cost ya? You could always use another port...

I tried using the https port 443 as well and that didn't work either. It was a pretty big Grrr moment for me. I live in Tacoma, WA which has it's own cable network system. The Commercial-2 line I"m paying for now is about $70 a month.

I'll work on getting instructions on how to change the port forwarding. The only real gotcha is the router config. Each one is different.

As I posted in another reply, it seems like our ISPs are really clamping down. Running numerous port tests shows no ports open at all. I went through the port forwarding effort as well, but with no luck. My tech support said to switch to a commercial account. Yippee.

If anyone has trouble with their MediaSmart server not working remotely due to port issues, router issues, etc, please feel free to PM me (that's Private message for those of you that are wondering)

I've done extensive work and testing with the MediaSmart server and port forwarding, port changes, configuration, etc

I'll try my best to point you in the right direction and make sure you are properly testing and troubleshooting before you give up!

TZO,

Thank you for the extensive details for fixing the blocked 80 port issue. I haven't had the time to try your suggestions, but will let you know how it turns out. I have a "new" server problem today which I will list in another thread.
