I recently added the debug cable board to my EX490. I also enabled jumper jp2 so I can access the BIOS. However now I get a messages "HP MediaSmart Server fans are not running at the proper speeds" I tried setting bios to optimal defaults. Is there a BIOS setting I need to apply ?

Anyone ever see this before ?

I would check the fan connections on the top of the backplane to make certain they are connected properly and do so quickly.

I have checker and rechecked the fan connections to the backplane. The fans are spinning
so im not sure what's the problem. Could it be a bios issue?

Or possibly something wrong the backplane. =; :-$ :(

You may want to also inspect the backplane for any physical damage to it plus reseating it may help too. The most common damage to backplanes reported by people is knocking off one of the capacitors which are on the fan side of the board. I believe the capacitors are for the hard drives. Anyway anytime I work with the MSS Backplanes I use two hands one inside to push up and the other for guidance and to keep the backplane against the cage wall then when its free from the motherboard then I carefully move it towards the fans and lift it out.

While you have it out for inspection also look at the bottom edge connectors to make sure they are clean and free of oxidization and have no burns. If the backplane looks clean with no physical damage then reinstall it but be careful, again a reminder that people often break off one of the capacitors when working with their backplanes.

The fan connectors are important because its too easy to plug the fans in off by 1 pin. I always use a flashlight to look at the fan connetctions to make certain they are connected properly because I know you can connect them 1 pin off and its an easy thing to overlook.

Everything seems fine on the disk backplane. Not sure what could have happened. I suspect something failed on the disk backplane. Maybe a sensor of some kind. Does HP sell replacement backplanes ?

HP doesn't sell any parts of the MSS and its a shame. There is no harm in contacting HP and requesting to purchase the backplane but to my knowledge thay have never sold any component for the MSS. I just sold a backplane to another user who had more serious issues with his. What you can try is substituting the fan with an RPM Sensor in it and see if that resolves the issue at hand.

If your fans are running fast enough to keep the system cool then I would not worry to much about the RPM reading. My guess is right now your fans are running at full or low speed but most likely full speed.
