I posted this on another site, so I am reposting here.

The equipment is EX495 with 4 x 1.5T seagate drives.

Original problem was that periodically I would not be able to connect to the server.

If I did a reboot of the system (press and hold power button 4 secs). The system would come back. After a period of time, I would again not be able to connect.

Once connected as a result of the reboot, I did a remote desktop connection. There were a series of error messages concerning the Firefly Services. I suspect the problem is with the media software and possible a bad file.

After a number of reboots to restore connections, the system would not restart.

I attempted a server recovery and was able to get the system back up and operational, however, it still lost connection after a time.

A second server recovery failed. In checking the error message, it was "Recovery failure" four flashes.

At that point I purchased a USB-SATA adaptor to take a look at the drives. Here is what I found:

Drive 4 - data in DE share folder (850M). I have copied the share folder to another hard drive.

Drive 3 - data in DE share folder (850M). I have copied the share folder to another hard drive.

Drive 2 - shows 20G. It appears that Drive 2 was made the system drive during the second recovery. I can't see data from the other partition (data). Using Windows 7 Control Panel Disk Partition view, shows 20G system and about 1100G unallocated.

Drive 1 - connecting to USB-SATA I get nothing. I can feel the disk spinning and hear the hardware recognition tone, but nothing appears in Explorer. Using Windows 7 Control Panel Disk Partition view, shows no partition on disk.

I recovered my files from Disk 4 and Disk 3, however, I do not see the partition for Disk 2 or anything for Disk 1. I didn't not have folder replication on.

I have not tried to do a factory reset at this point. Before attempting that I would like to know if there is a way to recover the data from Disk 1 and 2.

Any suggestions on the next step to recover the missing data before proceeding with an attempt to factory reset?

My question is, did you have more then (850M x 2) of data on the server, I'm guessing you did. Have you looked at the data from those 2 drives? Is everything there?
I think this is why one should have duplication on or have a non pooled drive with folder backups.

As far as the losing connection: That would be a process of elimination.
Cables/Switches/Router/Nic/Firewalls/Etc.

Go for a third recovery, save what data you can and do it again. The recovery failure could be because of the connection problem, (see process of elimination).
Hopefully it's not the nic in the server. Use a known good cable and connect it directly between the server and a 32 bit OS PC/Laptop and try it again.

Good Luck, and I feel your pain ](*,)

Thanks for the response. Yes. I think I probably have about 2.5T of data total. I am still trying to figure out how to view and recover the data partition on the boot drive.

I did a factory restore and will be checking it out.

This is the guide to use for recovering data from your server, however if the drives do not appear when connected to your system then something is likely wrong with them. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-U ... 573697777f

I suggest you look at spinrite (www.grc.com) I run a workshop and we deal with this sort of drive problem everyday. Spinrite is what all professionals in this area turn to first.
