MusicLover2112 I was just going to grab a L3360 and noticed why you were able to drop in without any heartburn. I thought it was socket 771 at 50w like the L54xx but it's actually a socket 775 @ 65w.

Based on the specs, I'm thinking it'll runs at similar temps as a q9950s. How hot does it run?

The CPU idles in the mid 40C range, but I do not have the fan header on my EX490 (later version from the NewEgg $350 fire-sale). When backing up clients or itself the CPU reaches mid 70C range. It works without a fan for me, but I would add a Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX if I had the header (one day I may solder in a header as the holes are there (need to verify if the traces are there too).

An added note on CPU compatibility for Windows Server 2025:

Windows Server 2025 is currently based on Windows 11 23H2 codebase, but will move onto the 24H2 codebase eventually before final release. Windows 11 24H2 will require a CPU with SSE4.2 and POPCNT attributes to boot moving forward with 24H2 build 26080. My Q6600 machine no longer boots Windows 11 after this build (even with a hacked registry install). My i5-2500K system does boot the latest Windows 11 24H2 build without issues since it fully support SSE4.2 and POPCNT. I'm not aware of any LGA775 CPUs that support SSE4.2 and POPCNT, so I would recommend NOT installing Windows Server 2025 on the EX490/495 servers (because when Server 2025 moves to the final 24H2 codebase it will no longer boot on our EX49X systems). I think over 20 years of service is pretty good software support (albeit unofficial).

Humph,

Even the L54xx only supports SSE4.1 So Server 2022 with the Office Maven add in it is. ESL is good for another 7 years.

I just found this bit of info on OfficeMaven's site:

HINT: You can use Windows Server 2019 / 2022 / 2025 for free by running one of the following commands, from an elevated command prompt, in order to convert the evaluation version into a volume-licensed version (Standard or Datacenter) using a Generic Volume License Key (GVLK) from Microsoft:

Windows Server 2019:

DISM /online /Set-edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:N69G4-B89J2-4G8F4-WWYCC-J464C /AcceptEula

DISM /online /Set-edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:WMDGN-G9PQG-XVVXX-R3X43-63DFG /AcceptEula

Windows Server 2022:

DISM /online /Set-edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:VDYBN-27WPP-V4HQT-9VMD4-VMK7H /AcceptEula

DISM /online /Set-edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:WX4NM-KYWYW-QJJR4-XV3QB-6VM33 /AcceptEula

Windows Server 2025:

DISM /online /Set-edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:TVRH6-WHNXV-R9WG3-9XRFY-MY832 /AcceptEula

DISM /online /Set-edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:D764K-2NDRG-47T6Q-P8T8W-YP6DF /AcceptEula

After doing that, you can then automate activation of the volume-licensed version using abbodi’s KMS_VL_ALL script that sets up a local KMS server emulator on the server.

For folks just running a private home server that has no business aspects this sounds like a way to get Server 2022 for free on the WHS; just remember to upgrade your RAM to 4GB, get a low-power quad-core and an SSD boot drive for best performance. Windows Server 2022 runs quite well with those upgrades, and now with this cool tip, the license cost is no longer a barrier to entry.
