I have an EX490. Ive used both the WHS 1 that it came with and it was great due to the addins. I installed WHS2012 essentials and its been running good just the lack of add ins sucks and my server always has the blue health light blinking.

What are your takes on both of these? what are you all using today? :sanjuan: :sanjuan:

First the Blinking Blue LED issue can be resolved along with the Hard Drive Light Bars with a couple downloads.

I have run and continue to run WHSv1 simply because of certain ADD-INs and I still use the WHSv1 landing page as a simple way for my family to access what I have on my server network but my storage needs grew and so I moved over to WHS2011 and then last April I migrated to WS2012E. Both WHS2011 and WS2012E support the larger then 2TB Drives and with its DOMAIN Setup I am able to use a very easy VPN to access my server and backup my clients outside my network. Its a win win for me and with Stablebit to handle my drive pool I have not looked back.

I do believe but can not speak for the entire community that WS2012E is too expensive for the average person and that for most WHS2011 is a very nice fit without the price tag of the software.

If your storage needs are small and you can live within the limitations of WHSv1 and its properly supporting your client backup/recovery needs then WHSv1 is still a viable solution but if your going to build a new server then WHS2011 or WS2012E are very good solutions depending on your budget and needs.

I do build servers but I do not build WHSv1 servers anymore. I will resell an existing server that does have WHSv1 on it but I am still uncertain how well it will backup & restore a Win 8 Client so the only servers I typically by today are for my collection or ones I want to modify for other purposes.

What works best for me may not be what will work well for others so its really an individual choice and there is no real right or wrong here just individual needs and preferences.

I use my EX490 is store all my music, movies, photos and data I do not want to lose. I have 10TB. 2 Drives are 4TB, 1Tb and 1TB.

I basically just stream movies which is ALL i use my EX490 for with either my Roku3 or WD Live.

I use storage pools on WinServer2012E to make all my HDDs one big HDD. There is just sooooo my options in Winderver2012. ITs really meant more for a work environment not media streaming. My only concern is there is no apps out on the market that I can ran the can monitor my HDD's or Fans if they are failing. Theres not hibernation apps like lightsout for this OS. The health light is constantly blinking blue so I have no idea if something is wrong or not.

Dont get me wrong its a great OS but is there something that I can use to help me with those missing options I use to have? Also if I do have to go back to WHS1. Does it support a 4TB drive?

I use my WS2012E server for many things and Media Storage and streaming, Client Backup/Recovery, Easy Server Recovery through the use of a dedicated OS Backup Drive, and a personal cloud using the VPN Component. I also like IIS8 and am just dipping my toes into that plus there are many other things I have in mind I want to do but just need to get them done.

To Correct the Health Light Issue:

Read through this link to resolve you LED Issue: http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/ ... -whs-2011/

To Resolve your Lights Out Hibernation issues check out what Gardian did:

To Monitor your Hard Drive use HomeServerSMART2013

As for a Fan Speed Monitoring Utility this I do not have anything to point you to at this time. Your EX49x controls the speeds via the BIOS and the things get on the hot side the server should automatically shut itself down for its own protection so you have that for your protection but unfortunately this is something I do not have information on but I am certain someone who does know might chime in and help out.
