Post subject:  Opinion on upgrading from 2011 to Essentials using SSD drive

Colleagues,

I am going to upgrade my self-built server from 2011 to Essentials and since all settings will be wiped out I want to find out what is the opinion of this forum as to changing the OS hard drive to an SSD drive. Right now, I have one Hitachi 500GB Deskstar 3.5", 7200RPM, SATA II, 16MB cache. Is it worth it?

Best regards.

Actually its a personal choice. I have an SSD installed on my WS2012E server others have 2 for the OS in a RAID1 Mirror configuration. I can't say its worth the extra expense or not after the server is up and running but it does help a lot when booting and if you run 3rd party applications.

Comp1962,

Thanks for the reply, that's what I thought. I think the money is better spent on upgrading the RAM from 4 to 16GB.

Best regards.

Its been quite sometime since I have looked at how much RAM my server is actually using but I know from running WHS2011 the most I can recall it consume was about 2.2 GB. I can put my WS2012E server under a load to see what its using as you may not need so much RAM unless your going to load things into it then it may be beneficial. As you can see I have 8GB in my server and it runs fine and I can install more if I want to up to like 32GB maybe more as I can not remember but if the server is not going to utilize it then why go down that road unless of course you want to.

I believe but am not certain you can create a RAM Drive and load things into RAM but its something I have not looked into all that much.

Just sharing my thoughts with you is all.......

It's just that I have not been convinced that I will gain anything by changing to a SSD drive, and again, this is my particular case. If we were talking about a client computer (PC, laptop, etc.) then it would make sense an SSD, not for a home server.

Thank you all, we can close this topic now.

I think SSD (although pricy) might have some real worth in a server for less power and less heat, besides the speed and small size. (yes 2.5 laptop drives are small, but not that fast)

Also, a server os load is going to be very small so a 160gig ssd, I don't see it as a waste in a server.
Now, with any system you should look at balance.
Just my 2 cents, I save harddrives for data and use ssd for os be it server or client.

Colleagues,

Just so everyone knows, I did go for the SSD as the system drive and upgraded the RAM to 16 GB. The combination provides for a very speedy boot up and quick program launches. The dashboard loads in almost no time at all.

Regards.

I like SSD's myself so much that I started using them in all my newer clients and on my primary server. I did happen to lose one recently but Intel Replaced it quickly so now I have an extra one.
