Update for folks. Server 2022 does indeed install on the WHS ex490. I wasn't able to perform an upgrade from 2019 to 2022 so a clean install was required (of course I made an image backup of the 2019 install just in case). There was no reason for this upgrade other than curiosity, but the gains are a smaller memory footprint 3.1GB vs 3.5GB average usage and consistently lower idle CPU usage (3-4% vs 5-6%). I'm not sure if I had something mis-configured in Server 2019, but 2022 does perform better (it is based on the newer 21H2 vs build base of 1809 for Server 2019). Obviously for a casual Home Server I will say the cost of a license would not be worth it over 2019 for most folks, as 2022 is only a minor improvement over 2019; whereas I felt that 2019 was nearly essential compared to the pokey-as-hell Server 2016. If you have to pay for a Standard license for either, might as well get 2022, I guess. A few technical notes:

1. Lights Management worked without a driver install - just the HpMssServiceSetup v1.0.6 was required, along with Visual C++ 2010 x64 v10.0.30319 Redistributable. My GPT drives don't work with the lights.
2. Windows Server Essentials Experience from OfficeMaven worked very well (I installed v20). One caveat is the Client Restore - it required the ADK/PE for Windows 10, version 2004 (v10.1.19041.1) and NOT the ADK for Windows Server 2022 since the 32-bit package is required for Client Restore to work (the Server 2022 version of ADK/PE only contains the x64 version).
3. To convert from evaluation to full standard version (with a valid key), enter this in an elevated CMD Prompt: dism /online /set-edition:serverstandard /productkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX/ accepteula

I'll know the server is ready when I perform a successful Client Restore - since I now use my TrueNAS Scale server for file storage (love that ZFS-RAID), the Windows Server remains solely for Client Backup/Restore at the moment.

Thanks for the update & detail @MusicLover2112 (gotta love this site and the folks here).

I still haven't pulled the trigger on a newer OS version, primarily because of the key cost. Nickle's are slowly gathering though...

For those wondering about the Lights Managment app problem @MusicLover2112 noted; development of that app stopped before the author could figure out how to make GPT drives light up the drive lights on the ex48x & ex49x. I actually just built and upgraded a 10tb ex490 using Vail & Drive Bender for someone and this setup has the same drive light issue. Storage is a 1gb SSD in MBR as drive 0 and the rest 3tb/GPT spinners. The MBR drive in slot 0 will light up, but the GPT drives won't.

But the app still stops that pesky blinking health light so there is that ....

Ok I performed my first Client Restore and it worked flawlessly. Server 2022 is pretty much a slightly faster 2019 running on a later build of Windows 10/Server. If you're coming from WHS v1, 2011 or even (shudder) 2012 R2 I can recommend it over 2016 (especially) and 2019 (slightly due to minor performance improvements). I also found a neat tip if you don't need or want to mess with the domain aspect of the Client/Server system:

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\ClientDeployment" /v SkipDomainJoin /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Enter the above in an elevated CMD prompt on your client and WHS Client Connector will install via the old Workgroups system (similar to WHS v1 and 2011).

That said if you're happy with WHS v1, 2011 or 2019 that's cool too - just remove v1 and 2011 from the Internet and you're fine (notice I skipped Server 2012 R2 Essentials and 2016 Essentials as I wouldn't install either, especially not 2012 R2). If MS didn't neuter the Essentials starting with 2019 it would have been an affordable upgrade but at the current MSRP for Server Standard the value isn't there for most folks, I imagine.

My Question is one of WS is overkill for home environment, right?

So I have an issue and cant find a solution to it on the internet. So I came to the best place I know, fill with people smarter than me for sure.
I tried to open up anywhere access for my new domain XXXXXXX.life. unfortunately, WS2022 says the domain is invalid and I need to enter a valid domain ext. has anyone else ran into this issue?

T-Bone, I selected an existing domain and that allow me to successfully get my domain working in WS2022.

Try selecting set up a new domain and see if it lets you enter in yours. If that doesn't work post at Office Maven to get their help - the guy seems very responsive.

I tried him first he hasn't ever ran into that issue so wasn't sure. Namecheap wouldn't allow me to swap .Life for .org so that is also out.

I added this after the connector should I uninstall and reinstall the connector? nothing happens except now the connector won't launch

If you don't want to join the domain you'll need to change your computer back to workgroup and uninstall the connector software. Then reboot, re-run the script in admin CMD and re-install the connector. This lets you use the connector software without messing with domains, if that's what you want to do. After that ensure the dashboard shows your machine is on-line when you connect to it; the group policy should say not applicable.

Posting this here as ultimately, there is a question relevant to this thread (promise).

I left a WHS11 server backup running overnight and when I checked the MSS in the morning, I found a really odd OS failure. The server wasn't being seen by clients, the health light was blinking blue, and the drive lights were dark (yes I have the lights mgmt add in).

I plugged in a monitor and restarted. At log in, the system was stuck at the ctrl alt delete screen and the keyboard and mouse was dead. But the keyboard would work in bios, just not at the log in screen. Luckily a Bootrec /fixmbr & fixboot & chkdsk /f /r on all drives allowed me to get back to the desktop & restored client access to my shares (phew).

Dodged the bullet. No need to figure out a restore using a backup of the Windows Home Server 2011 I had.

But note to self, if using the above commands to look for drive errors, make sure the server name didn't get changed in the registry. Somehow, mine changed from HPSERVER to SERVER (noticed this on a client). Yet the server's device name remained HPSERVER. So, the server wouldn't start a new server backup (system said it is an 'unknown error' and asks I check that all services are running). It took some hair pulling to figure that conflict out, but the experience revealed another issue.

While the chkdsk was running, I tried unsuccessfully to view the share data by plugging my trusty StarDock into a client with the back up drive mounted. File explorer saw the drive but wouldn't let me into it. That's when I discovered that unlike Alex's BDBB for v1, WHS11 uses a Virtual Hard Disk for the backups.

So:
1) Unless you attach the VHD backup drive in disk management on a w7, w8.1, w10, or w11 client, the only way to view the backup folders with file explorer is by using another WHS11 install
2) If you just try to view anything on the drive using a dock & client, the drive won't allow you to open it.
3) In my case WHS11 didn't see the backups using the console/restore either, so my failure also corrupted the server backup attempt.

And of course, for these and a couple of other reasons I'm now shopping for some disk image software for the WHS11 server. So here's my questions.

1) Do the backups created by s2k16, s2k19 & s2k22 also use VHD imaging to backup the server, the client backups, and the share backups?
2) If not, can you open and view files by hooking up your server's backup drive to another computer?
3) Have any of you tried to do a server restore using the newer server software with the Office Maven add-in

Sorry I can't answer all of your questions, Lion, but I have now performed several client restores (Windows 10 and 11 systems) and I have restored the server once via a 10TB WD Red Plus external drive connected via eSATA. My 3 internal 10TB WD Red Plus drives are configured via Storage Spaces in parity mode with ReFS and 4K cluster size. I will say I was inspired by you and others to upgrade my EX490's E8400 to the Xeon L3360. During certain situations (backups during file transfers, for example) I can really notice the difference with those extra cores. At this point there is nothing to do with this system until it has some failure. I've basically been using it to back up my computers and serve files since 2009, and it continues to do so reliably without any issues. Unfortunately the next Windows Server will be based on Windows 11 (or 12) and will require a TPM 2.0 module, along with a minimum 8th-gen Intel CPU. This means October 2031 is the end of the line for software support on this system.

All good info anyhow MusicLover. Thank you for posting. The VHD issue with WHS11 basically just means you can't see the backups unless using the console to get them open. Totally agree that the s2k22 / OM plug in install is the software upgrade to end up with & I have a spare ex49x setup to do it with. I just haven't gotten around to it yet as my WHS11 setup continues to "serve".

Because of the excessive heat you end up with using the 65w Core2 Quad processors (especially the 9 series Q9550s), I chose to settle with re-sloping the fan profile and run the minimum Q8200s. With a pair of little 30mm fans stuffed in front of the heatsink, this is getting me an idle temp in the low 40's and mid 50's under load. But, with the L3360 being only 50w & likely even less heat, I've been wanting to go in that direction for some time. Problem is I just couldn't find decent instructions on the hardware mod (adapting for the CPU pin changed needed on the XEON), actually finding the new BIOS, and it's install process all in one place. If you have a few minutes, it would be awesome if you'd be willing to author a new thread on it.

That gives the market 8 more years to come up with a better solution to what was offered by HP back in 2009... Fingers crosssed.
