The recent death of my HP MSS EX485 has me deciding to go forward on a DIY WHS 2011 server build. I'm a bit budget constrained at the moment so can't quite do it exactly the way I'd like (e.g. the $200 CFI hot-swap 4 bay case, new mini-ITX MB with USB 3.0 and a new AMD APU) so I'm re-using as much as possible from my MSS setup plus a few other spare parts I have. One of the big decision points was whether to RAID or not; after much reading on the topic of the death of DE, I have decided that hardware RAID is probably a better data redundancy solution. (I had major stuttering problems in the last few months of my EX485's life due to DE; I think it also creates a huge amount of unnecessary HD use which shortens the lifespan.)

At any rate, I've put together the following list of parts - only WHS, RAID controller and the RAM would be a new purchase. If anything stands out as an obvious sore thumb, I'd appreciate feedback.

WHS 2001 Proposed Build

Main Server
Case: Antec P150 (similar to current Solo model)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555
MB: ASUS M3A78-EM
RAM: A-Data 800 Mhz, 4 GB
OS drive: WD WD3200AAJS 320 GB
Data drives: 4x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (1.5 TB)
RAID controller: Areca ARC-1210 (H/W Raid 5)

External HD box to backup
Sans Digital TR4U USB 2.0
2 x WD20EADS Green (2 TB)

Options / Possible upgrades
Upgrade external case to support USB 3.0 & E-Sata (Sans TR4UTBPN)

[Edit: Revised RAID controller from HighPoint RocketRAID 2640X4 to Areca ARC-1210 hardware RAID.]

That looks like a fine setup to me, though I don't have personal experience with that RAID card. I presume you're planning on RAID5?

Yes, planning on RAID 5. I may revise the RAID card choice too; still looking around at reviews and I need to due a bit more due diligence to make sure there aren't any compatibility or driver problems with my MB and WHS 2011. Everything else is fairly standard but I've never delved into RAID before so it would be a good idea to use something others have had success with. The Highpoint RAID cards have a lot of good reviews on Newegg, in general.

Yep, RAID choice revised - decided to go for a real h/w RAID solution after Newegg sent me a 25% off coupon. Going with the Areca ARC-1210 4 port SATA card. Reviews look very good, hopefully I'll be able to do some initial checks with it this weekend.

I know this is an old thread. But how good was your 4x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (1.5 TB)?

That 7200.11 line is really a bad line. Many HDs was toasted. I had two of them lost on me. One is totally dead and the other I use as part of my test bench. Both were SMART tripped.
