Post subject:  Painfully Slow Network Speed

I have an EX490 with an E3300 and for some reason I cannot get above 1 mb/s really ever. I thought it may be the network card so I tried with a USB ethernet adapter, same result. While I suppose I can deal with it, I can only really use it for backup, I cannot stream movies off of it without constant pauses. I am not sure if anyone else has had this issue or if they knew what to possibly do to solve it. I can provide any other information which may be lacking in my description here should anyone need it in order to answer better.

Thank you in advance.

Has it always been slow or was it fast and something happened and now it's slow?

The word network speaks to a lot of fault points, starting at the server. It could be the nic, but you tried the usb nic and that didn't help.
It could be the wire, I replaced all my cat5 cables in the house a few years ago with cat6, try a different wire.

Where does the wire from the server go to, switch, router would be the most common. Ports can go bad on routers and switches, try a different port and see if that helps.
If it goes to a switch, maybe you could try to attach it direct to the router.

Is the router ok, are other pc's able to get decent speeds. I'm assuming you are talking wired connections as wireless connections will be slower, by a lot but still fast then 1 mbps.

Normal transfers on my network Giga switch and Giga router, pc to server is about 45-55 mbps. I can move a 1.5 tb video file to the server in about 15-20 seconds. +/-

If it is any type of file transfer then I would believe the server is fine, if it is only video, what are you using to stream or are you accessing the video file direct?
If it is only video, what type of video Blu-ray / Normal dvd rips / something else?

I hope this gives you some ideas, you will just have to trace it down.
Try some stuff and see what happens, shout out and let us know what you find.
Good Luck

We have to chat Guardian, my wired network speeds are nowhere near what you are seeing.

I think that is a typo.

Interesting, what kind of file transfer speeds are you seeing Ruben?

Post subject:  Re: Painfully Slow Network Speed

I have not measued them in quite a while but nowhere near gigabit as I recall.
Maybe the terms got mixed between Mb and MB in the discussion.

And as I have stated before. windows slows down after a while with large file transfers.
The first hour is fairly fast but after a hour it just slows to a crawl over time.
In the past I moved my pool drive folders around 12TB that includes a esata towerraid.
Took like 5 or 6 days, and it still crashed or stopped on occasion due to windows doing updates.

I have my connector disabled at the moment working on another project

For 1 TB I recall it takes hours with the MSS
I think Gardian meant MB

Think about it.
If the mediasmart was that fast why would we consider migrating to something else or upgrade.
I can't even fathom those speeds with something that does not even have sata 3 /6gb, Let alone even if it did.
Even with new lan hardwre with 10Gbs you have the bottleneck of the bus speed on the old motherboard.

Yes I recall a while back you detailed the network slow down issue. But I'm not yet thinking about a drop in speed after an hour. I'm seeing the issue even with a transfer that takes a minute or two.

Even if a mechanical hard drive could saturate a SATA2 connector (which as I've said before is hard to accept), at this point I'd be happy to see the speeds Guardian was referring to (pc to server at about 45-55 mbps). I'm super lucky if I see 10 mbps. Typically my file transfer speed is 6-8 mbps. #-o

Anyone else want to jump in with what they are seeing?

so we all compare apples to apples what tool are you using to view transfer speed.
When I reboot I will turn on the connector and try.

Good point,

All I've been using for reference is the little windows pop up that shows up when I'm copying or pasting something.

Back at ya, didn't you suggest a specific app in a prior post you did?

No, that is what I use but it does fluctuate quite a bit.
It all depends on if it is one large file or a lot of small files or a mix
There is a bandwidth loss on the negotiation of switching files.
There is no average
I will try a copy within the same drive on the pc then a copy from pc to server.
I will look for one large file.

When using the windows file manager the speed displayed is MB/s I believe that is MegaBytes per second.
All registry settings are stock from install No modifications to mtu etc.
Here are my results like it or not.

Created a 6.9 GB zip file.
All transfers are over Gbs lan unless noted.
The nas has 5400 rpm wd reds.
The first pc has a 7200 rpm wd black
The mss has 5400rpm wd red drives.
Both pc's have windows 10
They all connect via a gb switch
The pc's have Gb Nic cards.
The mss is using the stock internal Nic
The first pc I am running wamp64

This is a average since transfer rate varies during transfer.

From nas spin drives sata 3 to pc1 spin drives 100 to 85 MB/s sata 2
Disk to same disk on same pc 50 to 46 MB/s
can't test from pc1 to server due to conflicting software(wamp64)

From nas sata 3 spin drives to pc2 sata 3 ssd drive 99 to96 MB/s
Disk to same disk on same pc2 200 to 184 MB/s
pc2 ssd disk to ex490 spin drive 85 to 83 MB/s
Mss spin drive back to pc2 ssd 90 to 86 MB/s

Interesting results, funny that pc1 is like 40% slower on the same disk file transfer as compared to the NAS to PC1 transfer. Also it doesn't look like the sata2 in the MSS isn't really slowing you down much when transferring to PC2 as compared to the NAS.

One thing for sure, my file transfer speeds are in the single digits, while yours are averaging in the high double digits (given the file size). That's not good.

Post subject:  Re: Painfully Slow Network Speed

I did not know your speed was that low.

I used one large file because I already knew a mix of file sizes the speed would jump all over the place and be hard to visually track

google why file transfers are slow.

It could be the drive or any other equipment between the MSS and the PC including the NIC
There are some drastic measures to speed it up.
Like editing the registry
I would run chkdsk first on the client drive and possibly the mss drives.
then run defrag
That will take a while depending on the drive size.

Then possibly bypass any switches hubs or routers .

Thanks Ruben,

I have a Asus RT-N66Uwifi router in between my primary terminal and the MSS. Both are wired. The terminal I was using when I noticed the transfer speed was so slow has m.2 SSD on w7 with HDD's only in the MSS on v1.

I have a spare ex49x I was going to setup with the same HDD and a fresh install and wire direct to one of my w7 laptops on SSD and use that as a baseline. Heading out for vacation over Easter holiday for 10 days on the 17th so I don't know how far I'll get on this before I get back on the 26th.

Is your test file generic enough to put it up on a drop box? It would be interesting to run the same test with the same file.

Post subject:  Re: Painfully Slow Network Speed

let me try to PM you.
Is the m2 a sata card or do you have the NVMe version?
There is supposed to be a vast difference between the two
I have never tried a m.2 ssd card but they are supposed to be faster than a normal ssd drive due to they take two lanes in the pci buss if they are NVMe drives, otherwise they use the sata buss.
I only have one desktop with the special slot.
They have dropped in price so maybe I might try one some day.
Here is one comparision:
