They say a backup that cannot be restored is not a backup, so I'm in the process of testing this just to make sure it works.

I have a laptop with three (3) successful backups stored on my WHS 2011 server, and I'm trying to do a "bare metal" restore.

The backups are from a 64GB Windows 8 SSD with just the standard small install partition and the rest a single C: partition. I'm trying to restore to a standard 160GB SATA 2½" hard drive.
All attempts to restore exits with an error message. "Failed to initialize VDS, 0x80080005"

What am I doing wrong?

I'm glad this is only a test, but I don't know what to think of WHS 2011's ability to recover backups.

I actually got it to work on the third try by clicking on the "Back" button when the above error message appeared, and then tried again. Worked OK after that. Go figure.

Typical Microsoft Windows behaviour: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

When it comes to a restore operation, it should just work, period.
