I am remoting in to my HTPC to transfer files between my EX470 and my new server (WHS2011). I am just opening the shared folder from the EX470 and from the 2011 on the HTPC and moving the files between them. It seems about every other file I am getting: "Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect." Anyone know what this is about? The file appears to be copied as the files are in the source and destination and are the same size. It would be nice to be able to get rid of this error though.

I checked on a number of other forums (not necessarily WHS specific), and just about everybody who ran into a file copy problem that yielded that error and asked for help got the same answer. Try running CHKDSK /F /R.

Of course, that's trickier on WHS v1 because you need to run chkdsk for each volume mount point (located in C:\fs), as well as the C and D drives, and then reboot the WHS v1 box. On the WHS 2011 box, you'd need to chkdsk each lettered drive.

You can try omitting the /R parameter, which will skip the surface scan and yield a faster result. If there are errors in the NTFS file system, this should resolve them. If it doesn't, retry it with the /R. That can take many hours, unfortunately. :(

Thanks for your help. On the V1 machine, would it be easier to just shut it down and pull each drive one at a time and run CHDSK from another machine? I have a dock already set up. I am not really sure what you mean by each volume mount point but I may be able to figure it out.

I think I have narrowed it down to either the USB 3.0 controller, the cable, the mediasonic enclosure (HF2-SU3S2) or the drive. This is what I have tried:

EX470 to 2011 USB3 mediasonic = 20 MB/s with errors
Ex470 to HTPC = 70-80 MB/s no errors
HTPC to 2011 USB3 mediasonic = 20 MB/s with errors
HTPC to 2011 server internal drive = 70-80 MB/s no errors
2011 internal to 2011 USB3 mediasonic = 20 MB/s with errors (via HTPC remote desktop)

Tonight I think I will try connecting my USB3 dock to the same port on the card and using the drive out of the mediasonic to see if I get the same results.

Check the event logs too. See if you have errors or warnings posted by "disk" or "ntfs." Event ID 7, source "disk," type "error is very bad -- That is the "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D" error and often is an indicator of disk failure.

Some other errors/warnings will reference disks by hardware name, either \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEx or \Device\Harddisk1\x. When using the latter, the number after "Harddisk" (i.e. 1) corresponds to the physical disk number in the Disk Management snap-in. An example is "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\D, is not ready for access yet."

Another common one is "The driver detected a controller error on <device>." This may have the name of an I/O controller, and it won't give a readily useful name. It won't say "Intel ICH9 Serial ATA Controller," but rather something like "ScsiPort0" or "iaStor." Which means you need to poke around Device Manager to see which device is--or could be--the guilty party.

Well, I put the drive on dock and I got about 55 MB/s with no errors. I decided to put the mediasonic on the same short cable and I got the same speed with no errors. I decided to put the mediasonic back in the cabinet and use my longer cable and I am currently getting about 43 MB/s with no errors. So.... apparently my issue was caused by a cheap rosewill USB 3.0 cable. It also appears that length of the cable has some bearing on transfer rate as well. Here are the 2 cables I am using if anyone is interested:

The cheap rosewill:

Accel Premium 3M:

I ordered this cable to see if I get any better results:

What tool or process are you using to test the transfer speeds? Robocopy or something else?

I was just going by the numbers that windows gives you.

Just for an update, I also tried a monster USB 3.0 cable and it was one of the worst. I thought it was a bad cable so I ordered another one and it performed the same. It didn't give me errors like the rosewill cable, but it would start out really fast and drop down. The Accel cable still appears to have the best performance.

My hypothesis is that this is a resistance vs. power issue. Some cables will have more resistance than others and the card will need to have more power available to remain in the high-speed mode. When power becomes an issue the card ratchets down the speed to conserve energy. A card that has a power connection may not have this issue.
