Thanks all for this great forum with a lot of info!!!
I followed all the good instruction to create a bootable USB, created my cfg.ini file and set the USB drive to bottom rear port.
I tried an 8gb flash disk (the server does only touch the USB drive once during start up and after that no more). as well as a 80gb hard drive in a USB box (first look better as there was activity for a whle, the health led blinked aqua/red as it was reported by other, howerver, activities stopped and the led continued blinking).

I can see a new PC coming up on my router for a little while but disappearing again without getting the right name associated to it in the cfg.ini.

I also have a jumper now on jb2 pins.

Error code from the health LED says: Recovery failed...

Of course the hard drive supposed to become the system drive is never touched, I checked it on another PC.

What else can be wrong or could be done differently to get it running?

Thanks DrW

I have a theory that it doesn't actually get past the point of the installation where it asks you if you want to make a new installation or repair an installation. I have been trying to install via USB to increase the size of the system partition but for some reason the installation waits for user input.

Unfortunately no. I will try to detach the jp2 jumper to see if this it helps. But I won't be able to do it before thursday evening (GMT+1).

I tried both, with and without JP2 jumper, no difference...

I agree, it looks like the machine is waiting for something.

Are you sure your boot device is configured correctly? Have you tested it in a PC? The "Recovery Failed" message makes me believe that the system is trying to boot to recovery mode, not off of USB.

not 100%, I used the following instruction:
http://sbs.seandaniel.com/2009/10/how-t ... table.html.

I also tried fat32 but only for the flash disk (8gb)
I also left the disk with the assign commant to be able to copy the files from teh CD and the cfg.ini file.

The CD is officially bought as system builder licence. Could it be it is awaiting the licence code?

I could change boot priority for my win7 PC, is there any risk it will start formating my hard disk...

I don't have an X510 but I occassionally have trouble with the boot priority on my EX485 and it gives the same message as you got. My suggestion is to try another USB thumb drive or System drive but I have gotten around that by installing until first reboot on my Desktop then moving the drive over. It's just a tough install without a video and keyboard.

And since I can attach my screen I can clearly see it!! I should have done that right from the beginning...

with the jp2 jumper you can connect the usb-mouse and just do one click, that's it!!

Glad to hear it worked. My problem is that just doing the installation manually won't suffice. I need to get the USB boot to work since I am trying to change the default SystemPartitionSize. But for some reason the server doesn't acknowledge the Processed=true flag and simply begins to load Windows files again. It's really a pain.

I use booting from USB drive, the 80gb hard disk worked fine. All the installation was running automatically, except the described "click". I will post the cfg.ini later today...
Did you check if your harddrive is still untouched? There were cases reported where the initial trial was unsuccessful and left a partition. Any following trial did of course not work.

Finally got the USB to auto install WHS 2011. Unfortunately the Systempartitionsize = MAX didn't kick in and I still got a 60 GB Windows drive. Some sources on the net states that it is simply a documentational error and that WindowsPartitionSize should be used instead. Will try it put tonight.

The cfg.ini file is documented here: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/04 ... ash-drive/

I've done this successfully several times on an X310 so I know it works. Be sure you follow the steps correctly:

1) The USB flash drive must contain a bootable copy of WHS 2011 and contain the CFG.ini file with the correct information. (If in doubt, test this out on a system with a monitor/keyboard first).

2) The flash drive has to be placed in the lowest USB port on the REAR of the server.

3) The ONLY drive in the server must be CLEANED (I use DISKPART) and be in position 1. It must be greater than 160GB I believe.

Since your flash drive isn't blinking much, that suggests the X510 isn't booting from it so I'd put it in your desktop (rename the CFG.INI first) and make sure it will boot and start up the WHS installation.

Stuart.
