Post subject:  Installation problem on EX470 - setup fails at copying files

Tryin to install Windows Home Server 2011 on an EX470. Server has 2gb RAM. Using a blank 500gb drive. I have a VGA cable so I can see the setup screens. I have a USB stick with the WHS 2011 media plugged into the back bottom USB port.

The server boots to the USB stick and the install process starts fine. It gets to copying files and hangs at 0%. Then it errors out. I look at the log file and its getting stuck at

Error: Win7 Setup Exited with 31
UIBackend::RunWindowsSetup: Exited (0x80004005)

Any ideas? I have tried both manual install and using cfg.ini, it always fails at the same point. I also tried using a different blank hard drive.

I had that problem when I installed on an EX485, it's been a while now but I think I reformated the drive and made sure the boot sequence only had the usb thumb drive and the hard drive to install on. I think I wound up using another formated hard drive because the error basically can't write to the hard drive.

It does write to the drive though. The installer is able to partition the drive, it just fails at copying files after. I also tried 2 different blank drives. I'll try formatting the partitions and running the installer again then.

That's because when it comes back to the drive for the copy it cannot write to the drive or doesn't find it. I solved it by using another formated drive eventually. I think the first way I solved the problem was to do the first part of the installation(until the first reboot) on another machine the brought the drive over to the MSS to complete the installation. It was a strange problem but solved by having only the target drive and the usb in the boot sequence and removing the usb at first reboot.

I have the exact same problem and spend some evenings to try to solve it. How did you finally get it tio work?

The easiest way was to do the first part of the installation on another machine(until the first reboot) then move it to the MSS and boot off that to complete the installation. I have video access to the MSS and I think what I found was the boot sequence was messed up with the hard drive not showing and I would up installing on another drive. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with the initial drive I used but the MSS for some reason didn't like it.

I had this when I first tried to install WHS 2011, I ended up using a different USB key and it installed fine. Also the system drive must be blank with no partitions.

Yeah, install it on another computer - skip doing the updates during install. Once you get it installed, then move the drive to your EX470. Once you get it in your EX470 you can RDP into it and get the updates, activate it and then do whatever else you want.

I finally got this working. Make sure you pick USB-CDROM as the boot source, even if you are using the USB flash drive. I was picking the option for USB stick instead, and though it booted correctly, I would get the setup error 31. Once I booted using USB-CDROM as the boot option, it booted from the USB stick, and no setup 31 error. Just follow these instructions exactly -
